Tumble problems

I have not clicked the link, but I am going to bet it involves Kirk and a Gorn.

Edit: Damn, incorrect.

Here's what I thought it would be.

I've got an idea.

Can anybody describe or link a Tumbling move from a movie? I'm not talking about the wild stuff in Prince of Persia. I'm talking about a move that you think is "Tumbling" but isn't all back and hand flips.

Can anyone show me in a movie (or just describe the scene--I've seen a bunch of movies)--what they think of when a character uses Tumble in the game?

Sorry I don't have time to find a decent clip to post, but maybe re-watch the Fellowship of the Ring movie. In the fight with the cave troll in Moria, there is a scene where Sam, with his enormous backpack full of crap, dives between the troll's legs to avoid a blow. It's not pretty, and not prince of Persia or Jackie Chan smooth, but I can imagine that as a successful use of tumble to avoid an AoO.

Here's the clip of Sam v. Cave Troll that was mentioned.

He begins his awesomeness at :56. There's music as well (which I happen to like, so I suggest just watching the whole thing), so you've been warned.

One thing I notice about the fights you linked to is that they all seem to be fought by the equivalent of Fighters and Barbarians... classes that don't get Tumble. Tumble is often found on finesse classes, which in D&D terms would be monks, rogues, swashbucklers, and etc.

That's a good point--maybe I bias I didn't recognize as my campaign is set in Cimmeria with all PCs being Barbarian class. And their foes, at this point, are other Cimmerians from other clans, and other Barbarian classes (Vanir, Aesir, and Picts).

Those may be the glasses I'm viewing Tumbling through.

Incidentally, and I realize that this is probably a pedantic point, but are those above fights you posted realistic, or do they appear to be realistic?

This is the third time I've said that they're hyper-realistic. Realistic, not real. Hero-realistic.

Now, this is very, very interesting. So your point, Jonesy, is that Ali's footwork is...tumbling?

You don't think it's Dodge?

I'm kinda with ya and kinda not, but the footwork itself does start to put a different picture in one's head about Tumbling other than Asian choreographed dance moves.

Yeah, I remember that. He just ducks down and runs between the Cave Troll's legs. Here's the clip.

It looks like the Cave Troll has initiative and makes attack roll against Sam. The attack roll fails. Then, on Sam's turn, he decides to get the heck out from in front of the Big Mean Monster and moves through his square.

Mechanically speaking, he must have Tumbled through the Troll's square because he avoided an AoO.

Good Example, Ranger. The best one yet.

This is also a tumble.

OK, the back-and-forth fancy footwork, like Ali above. OK, I gotcha.

here's how too many ranks in tumble can prove dangerous to one's health....

Had I been drinking a Coke, it would have come out my nose. Friggin' hilarious.

Reminds me of this...
