Can't stand up, but can tumble crawl....

The DC 15 Tumble check is to avoid AoOs as part of normal movement. You're not moving when you stand from prone; you're remaining in the same square. 'Half speed' and 'full speed' are irrelevant concepts when you're not covering any distance.
-Hyp.
I think Kmart was thinking of what is said in the FAQ. While you can't stand up you could do a crawling tumble 5ft away and then stand up. Here is the info from the 3.5 FAQ.

Q: Can a character use the Tumble skill from a prone position? Specifically, if my character is prone, can he use Tumble to move out of a threatened square without provoking an attack of opportunity?
A: According to a strict reading of the rules, no. The key phrase in the Tumble skill description is this: "Tumble at onehalf speed as part of normal movement. . . ." You can’t move "normally" while prone, thus you can’t use Tumble in this manner while prone.

The only "normal" movement allowed while prone is to crawl 5 feet as a move action that provokes attacks of opportunity. I don’t think it stretches the rules unreasonably to allow a character to use Tumble while crawling, but since you can’t crawl at half speed (half of 5 feet is less than a full square), you’d have to take the -10 penalty on the Tumble check for using accelerated tumbling. Thus, a character could make a "crawling Tumble" - think of it as an "action roll" if you prefer - to move 5 feet as a move action without provoking attacks of opportunity; such an action would require a DC 15 Tumble check with a -10 penalty.

I've always allowed my players a move action tumble check to get up from being prone without an AoO. While it may not adhere to the RAW, it's such a staple of fantasy fiction and movies that not allowing it really seems to violate the feel of the game. Free action? no. Move action? Definitely.

Sounds good to me.

Tumble is already one of the most important combat skills, so that just keeps piling it on. The other classes are just gonna complain louder about have to cross-class. :)

I like how Iron Heroes makes standing up from prone cause no AoO. My players were surprised about that, they thought they were going to be screwed, which distracted them from the real damage dealers in the encounter.

Agreed which is why if you allow Tumble to kip up then a good solution is too allow Jump to Kip Up also. It worked so well for our Iron Heroes games that we rolled that rule over into our 3.5 games.
