Turn Based Strategy Dying Out?

Front Mission 3 for the original playstation, was a terrific turn based strategy wargame. You control a group of 3 to 4 mecha, that you can upgrade or even replace completely with captured units. Not to mention being able to build a mech almost completely from scratch.

If you are feeling a bit more adventurous. The SD Gundam G-Generation from Japan games are terrific TBS games. However, you do need at a minimum some knowledge of Gundam and the mecha, plus you will need some sort of mod to enable you to play foreign games. There are however some great guides on how to play them available online. Recently a version has been released for the GBA and they can apparently play foreign games with out mods.

Lastly if you can find it there is a game called Neo-Nectaris for the PSX which is an updated version of the classic Military Madness.

Between my Heroes of Might and Magic games, especially III and IV, my Disciples games and my Age of Wonder games, I'm still feeling the love for TBS. HoMM may be dead(ish) since 3do died, but I've heard the property has been picked up by someone else. Age of Wonders has a new release just within the last few months. I think TBS is still moving along.

It probably always was niche, though. Besides those three series, fantasy TBS games are pretty rare.
