Turn Undead question

Clumsy Bob

First Post
If you can turn undead (or rebuke) a number of times a day of 3+ CHA bonus what happens when you cast eagles splendor?
For example my current PC is in the middle of a dungeon and has used 5 of his 7 turn attempts for the day.
If he casts ES gaining a +2 CHA bonus and uses 2 more attempts what happens when the spell expires?
And if he uses all of his attempts then casts ES does he gain 2 more attempts, if so what if he was to cast the spell in a later encounter?

Thanks

Bob

Since it's not excluded by the spell description, Eagle's Splendor does give you extra turning attempts, as well as giving a (higher) bonus on turning checks and turning damage.

If you were going to go with this then i'd say once the spell wears off you would not have any more turn attempts left. But, if you had no turn attempts left i'd see it being reasonable to gain another 2 while the spell was going.

Eagles splendor of turn undead?

Whaddaya mean? It's the rules. It effectively grants you two extra temporary turning attempts. That does sound illogical considering that you don't get extra spells from it, but never-the-less that is what it says.

Well, turning attempts count against a daily total. I would allow you to gain more from the use of Eagle's Splendor, but it would just accrue against your today. If you used 5/7 for the day, cast Eagle's Splendor to gain an extra 2, then you would have used 5/9. Say you use two more before the spell expires, now you have used 7/9. When the spell expires, you will be at 7/7 and you will be out, unless you cast Eagle's Splendor again.

Now, if you use Eagle's Splendor and end up using your "extra" turnings, you will be ack up at 9/9, or "overdrawn" at 9/7 when the spell ends. Of course, at that point, further uses of Eagle's Splendor won't gain you any more turning attempts since you would just be bumping your total per day, which you have already met.

Eagle's Splendor just allows you to, temporarily, exceed your normal bounds. It does not provide a reset on the number of times you have used an ability in any given day.

It's not illogical when you consider what sort of abuse the "no bonus spells" rule was intended to prevent.

If you got bonus spell slots from the mental buffs, most spellcasters could use a 2nd level slot to cast one of the mental buffs on themselves, and as a result, get a bonus spell of a higher level in addition to the increased save DCs, skill checks, and so on. In other words, a sorcerer could cast eagle's splendor on himself and gain a bonus 3rd level spell slot. This is too powerful for a 2nd level spell, since a 2nd level spell shouldn't be able to grant you a 3rd level spell at will.

Allowing extra turning attempts doesn't pose this sort of problem. It is a fairly minor bonus, and not really that big of a deal.

IMHO this is clearly the correct way to go.

If you normally have 7 turn/day, +4 Cha gives you 9 turn/day for the spell duration. If you use all 9, the spell ends and you cast it again, you have used 9 already for today so you don't get 2 new attempts every time you cast this spell, it just increases the maximum until the effect last.

This depends on how you handle replenishing uses per day of any ability. 3.0 was vague on that issue, and I don't recall 3.5 being more precise. In my game, characters recover their uses per day once per day after they have rested (unlike spells, no preparation is required). Thus, I would not allow PCs to get extra turning attempts from short-term effects like eagles's splendor, same as for spells.

I treat it like spell slots IMC. You get your spells after learning in the morning (or whenever) and the number of spells per day doesn't change if you cast owl's wisdom or some other mental stat booster. The only exception is a permanent boost from a headband of intellect or a periapt of wisdom or such.
If you treat turn undead in a similar way (you regain your turns/day while praying for spells) you don't have any problem with multiple castings of eagle's splendor over the day.
The only thing the stat boost gives you is a plus on turning checks and turning damage, which is good enough on its own.
