Turn Undead should be removed!

Now that I think about it, I think I did misuse the word "physiologies". What I meant was that dragons can be explained as simply being flesh-and-blood creatures, so an atheistic Philosopher in a fantasy world could accept the existence of dragons, while still maintaining that ghosts don't exist.

To bring it all back to the subject of the thread, I wanted to point out a way in which one could have something mechanically identical to undead turning, without bringing Gods or "positive energy" into it. And its worked out pretty well in game play, and made for great role-playing.

In my campaign there is a Philosopher class with many of the same abilities of clerics, but based on superior understanding of humanity and the Universe, rather than devotion to gods. They can debunk undead, rather than turn them. It functions much like turning, except that a success means that the Philosopher has convinced everyone that the corpses aren't really moving, the apparent ghosts are really just mists and shadows, etc. The previously placed undead monster just becomes an ordinary corpse if it was corporeal, or disappears if it was incorporeal.

As atheism only has to do with deities, and not the supernatural, I would presume most fantasy atheists would accept magic. If they're naturalists, they'd simply see it as science.

As for dragons, the Pern novels are science fiction, and not fantasy, so it's been done. ;)
