If you borrow the Action Points mechanic from d20 Modern (you can look at it in the d20 Modern SRD), you can have spells that normally cost XP require Action Points to cast. That gets rid of any great any advantages long-lived races would get from an age-penalty; plus, Action Points are quite useful in the game. It allows PCs a second chance to save their bacon or make a heroic action without the DM having to fudge rolls.
