Twists from the norm

Pardon me if this is a silly question, but if the place is totally surrounded by a vast desert, why would they call the desert the Ocean without Water? Would the know about oceans at all, and if they did, wouldn't they be more likely to call them Oceans with Water?

This is set about 20 years after the revolution against the big evil demon thingies (Daedra) who were slowly losing their purchase on reality anyways. The Daedra are the ones who made it so the gods couldn't get around, and also did alot of..."remodeling", most people don't even know what Bahr bela Mahr means, as alot of time has passed since Kandril has seen a body of water large enough to be called an ocean, it's basically what the first slaves (the ones who knew that there really was an ocean on the west coast of Kandril) called it after the Daedra wrecked the area, which was a loooong time ago. I guess the long and short of it is, if anyone even remembers the language (kind of a poetic bardic language) they're still a bit confused about the name, most people just call it Bahr bela Mahr, and stay away.

In my next campaign, halflings will rule the world! They will be the oppressors!

As for what twists I use currently? A lot, as a matter of fact. Maybe it would just be easier if you followed the link in my sig and read the first few posts, where I talk about the setting...

for starters...

1. The setting is a *large* (2200 miles across) "valley" surrounded by a chain of enormous mountains (up to almost 30,000 feet). In the center of this valley lies a warm interior sea within which lies a large tropical island. No one knows what lies beyond the mountains, they are the icy end of the world.
One of the campaign secrets is the fact that beyond those mountains there is indeed only ice: the planet is an "iceworld", the "valley" a titanic crater created thousands of years ago.
2. Orcs aren't necessarily evil: they are more of a barbaric version of dwarves - a very war-oriented race in this setting. Dwarves & Orcs (i.e. fighters & barbarians) tend to hold a grudging respect for each other - a courtesy that is not extended to elves...
3. favored class for elves is Sorceror
4. Gnomes have no illusion abilities: their favorite class is wizard and they receive bonus skill points like humans as they advance in level. They come primarily from one region of this setting but live in small communities in almost all large cities: think of a crossover between chinese & jewish immigrants.
5. no one likes halflings: they are the gypsies & chimney-sweepers of this setting: exploited, abused, and distrusted bottom-feeders, thieves, con-men, and fortune tellers. The favored class of female halflings is Wizard (Diviner).
6. Another campaign secret: the planet is part of the Dragonstar setting...
