Unattainable Ideal
I grew up playing D&D mostly with two buddies of mine. We each ran a campaign and played multiple characters in each others'. I mean, I played something like fifteen characters in one campaign. Sometimes simultaneously!
It was GREAT fun. Never done it in any other setting but with the three of us it was a way to A) have a complete party with only two players, and B) be able to DM all sorts of different adventures or follow separate story lines with whichever characters you wanted.
We were also literally playing every single day for three or four years, so being able to jump from one party to another was helpful for reducing boredom.
