Ultimate 10th level Wizard?

Sinklar

First Post
I have been commisioned to create the ultimate 10th level wizard. I can use any of the core races that do not have an ECL. I will have starting gold equivalent to what is stated in te DMG for a 10th level character. Assuming that I will have a 16-18 INT, what do some of you think would be the best route to take? Is there a thread here somewhere that already covers this?

One other thing I'd thought about was keeping it simple (be human), but going spec. evocation or spec. conjuration. If you had to choose between those two, which way would you go? Is it better to just blast your enemy apart, or sic the dogs of hell on him?

An evoker is probably better when it comes to sheer fire-power. Boost your wizard with Maximise or Extend spell. Get boots of speed or haste and just blast away. Two maximised lightning bolts per round kills most things. However, sorcerers make for better evokers in my opinion. The downside is that a specialist evoker is probably more specialized than any other wizard. You see most spell books you find will contain lots of evocation spells. As you will have to pick these when you level up you don't gain as much from getting enemy books.

Conjurers are probably the most versatile of all specialist wizards. There is not much a conjurer can't do as the summoned critters each have their own special uses. The thing to remember when making a conjurer is to languages. You need lots of lingos, say ten to twelve different languages. Don't bother picking elven or dwarven but go for the others; formian, ignan, abyssal, celestial and so on. The downside is that a conjurer is rather slow. However, this can be overcome to a certain extent with Haste. Take a look at the Summon Monster erratas as there are a lot of misconceptions about the rules.

For sheer power I'd go evoker. If you want to solve riddles and traps I'd go conjurer.

It depends if you want sheer firepower (read previous poster) or a vesatile wizard.

It also depends on if your experience is 10th level exactly or you get more or are allowed to create a 9th level wizard with the other experience spent on created items.

If you're allowed to do the above, create wands at half-price (and pay XP of course) of all the big firepower spells you have in your spell book, buy scrolls to ensure you have all the spells you could hope for which you put into your spellbooks, even go so far as doing create miscellaneous items such as cloaks etc.

The next of course is that you'll have Permanency available. Make all the utility spells permanent ... I know people don't think it's all that great, but a mage running around with Detect Magic, See Invisible, Protection from Arrows, etc continuously operating can be pretty useful.

I created a 6th level wizard with craft wand (he had halfway between 6th and 7th level experience) and create a wand of lightning bolts and one of magic missiles. Quite formidable when he can offload lightning bolts at will (within 50 charge limit of course).

TSK, TSK, Sinklar, in the spirit of our competion I ask you to keep it fair across for all the rest of the group that doesn't have access to this illustrious group.

We are not going to use a DM. I was inspired by a lot of the threads on here to really see which class is the best. So I thought a tournament would be in order. Now Sinklar is the most knowledgeable guy in our group when it comes to D&D and really doesn't need any help, especially most of the group will not have help like this.

I think you could go for transmutation as well. They are very versatile and the school of transmutation has the most choices of spells.

LOL .... I don't think I'm good at min/maxing ... in fact my idea was based around utility, not being a bad ass in a tournament ... but I can understand if you're afraid ...

fear leats to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering

hehehehehe I love Yoda, the movie was half-ass but I still love Yoda.
