So if genocide, imperialism, slavery, body horror, cannibalism, etc, should be removed from Dark Sun because children can't handle them then how come Doctor Who is/was so popular when it has all of those?

Dune's really popular and it's got all of those and is rated PG-13.

What's the actual harm?

Good question. I suspect lot of the outrage is manufactured by WotC/Hasbro.
I don't think that's the case.

There were actually harmful things in past D&D books (and some new ones), there's just been an overreaction exacerbated by social media when it comes to what should or shouldn't be depicted in fiction.

I think it ultimately comes down to how things are handled/portrayed. Prince of Egypt is rated PG and it starts off with the mass murder of infants, shows the horrors of slavery, etc.

I mean, the short answer is that Dr. Who is a British show and genocide, imperialism and slavery are indelible parts of British culture. Cannibalism too, if you consider the Picts as British.

There were slavery in the Endless-Quest gamebook "The Mountain of the Mirrors".

Now in the internet age things may be different because characters from cartoon shows for children can appear in NSFL parodies.

Dark Sun is a special case because usually in child-friendly stories with slavery, the slaverers are punished before the end of story but in region of Tyr it is more complicated because to defeat the sorcerer-kings will need a lot of blood, sweat and tears.

There are slavery in the domains of drows, illithids and other evil realms but these aren't mentioned explicitely too much.
