Uncouncious inspiring word

OK divine spells healing a dying character (and unconscious character) I can understand, but what about the warlords inspiring word? Has this been ruled on that anyone has seen?

I hit this last night twice (it was a good night for the kobold's) i ruled that the words of the warlord were so inspiring they reached out nearly through deaths veil and inspired the person to get up. Literally the drill Sargent telling his dying private to get up off your ass you lazy puke.

How are others playing this?

It is treated exactly the same as the clerics healing word. Nothing in the rules would make it apply differently, even though the 'flavouring' of it is a little different.

Huzzah for Warlords, I say.

The warlord in my group multi-classed Paladin. As far as I'm concerned, his Inspiring Word borders on the divine. His background is that he'd be a paladin, but his temper just doesn't keep him in the alignment needs for Bahamut. But nothing says that the Inspiring Word is just words of encouragement; perhaps there's actually some supernatural healing at work. Why not?

On a similar note, it seems weird that the warlord's passive abilities (Combat Leader and Commanding Presence) function when the warlord is unconscious/asleep. It doesn't seem that it would be very inspiring to see him lying face down in the mud after being spanked by some thug. We treated it as a 'win one for the gipper' moment, but still. It gets old in a hurry.

I doubt that Combat Leader and Commanding Presence work, when the Warlock is unconscious.

On the same note, I doubt an unconscious Needletooth Swarm has an aura, and an unconcious Paladin lying adjactant to the target of his challenge is considered challenging it. That is hardly a Warlord thing.

They actually do work. What better way to spur your comrades to victory than to fall in the heat of battle?!

But yeah, a couple abilities just don't make sense when you go unconscious.
