Under what conditions would you give advantage/disadvantage?

I would grant advantage on skill checks where training should matter more than raw talent. The +3 on a trained skill can seem too little, especially compared to someone with no training and a 16 or higher in the relevant ability. Depending on the context, give advantage to someone with relevant training when attempting something more advanced, or give disadvantage to the untrained attempt. This covers the issue with average Int clerics trained in religion compared to high Int wizards.

Another place I'd use it would be something like a 16 Str halfling grappling with a 16 Str human. The ability mods are the same, but the halfling simply doesn't have the mass.

This why I HATED that the Improvise section of the "How to Play" file was so small.

I allow flanking but it is not free, it costs an action. And the Flankee can spend an action to end it.

I'm glad people responded to this as I felt it was a very interesting topic worthy of discussion.

As we can already see, there seems to be a big disparity between what people will and won't grant. It's all a matter of perspective. I'm both happy and a bit concerned about this. On the one hand it's good that each DM's game can be radically different just by altering the frequency of using one simple mechanic, but on the other it's concerning because there can be such a large disparity over such a minor aspect of the system.

As much as I'd like to see this in use and agree with its use, it would never be widely accepted for fear of sexism. After all, if size and mass matter, then women will never be 'as strong' as men, and that road leads to madness :)

Advantage/disadvantage are binary. You either get another die or you don't. No stacking.
Right. But we also know that if I get Adv from a source and then I get Disadv from a different source, they cancel. So my question is, "What if I get Adv from a source, then Disadv from a source, and then Adv from a different source?" I get that you can never get multiple dice, but this is a different question.

Weigh over 400 lbs(hey no fat boy comments please) my 80lbs nephew will never beat me wrestling... But Linda who is well under 200lbs could probly win as often as loose.

Ah. I get it.

I'd see if anything was left after the cancellations were handled, and go with that. So, 4 Advantages and 6 Disadvantages would still result in a net 2 Disadvantages and the Disadvantage die would be in play.

That's just my gut reaction, though. I haven't seen anything official.

That's what I'd do as well. I'll be interested to see how it shakes out.

I'm kind of hoping they don't have a list... I like the idea of it being fully open ended.

Agreed. The most appealing thing about it is the openness.

On the other hand, I've seen a couple of responses in this thread that make me want a small amount of guidance, lest two tables feel like different games.
