Understanding Shifting...

Grendal_P

First Post
I am trying to understand shifting, and how it is handled...

Currently we have a member of our party that is the following
Monk(1) / Druid(5)

he plans to take his next level in Shifter and begin up that path...

My question is this... i'm having trouble deciphering what he can, and can not turn into at this point.

I am assuming only Small & Medium sized animals of no greater hitpoints than himself (in this case 6). But being that the shifting ability refers to Polymorph Self, which refers to Polymorph other, which says you can change into Large things... lets just say... i'm really confused...

Also... in terms of their Base Attack and Hit Points, and all that good jazz. What happens? Do they take the BAB and HP of the animal they are assuming, or how does that work?

Thanks...

First of all... Welcome!

And second... which version (3.0 or 3.5) whould you like to see reflected in the answer?

Mike

We are specifically playing 3.0 version, although with many of the things we are using, we are slowly drifting towards 3.5...

So I guess if its not to terribly much trouble, i'd like to kinda hear it from both the 3.0 and the 3.5 version as to how shifting works.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome!

Could you tell me where I can read the discription of the Shifter class, or post the class information?

3.0 Shifter PrC was more than a little wacky as far as balance goes (our DM at the time had to cut back some of the abilites abit to keep it in line). The Warshaper PrC in Complete Warrior is pretty sweet with mega attribute bonuses, improved reach, and immunity to crits etc. as you go up in levels.

Under 3.5:

If by "hitpoints" you mean hit dice, maybe. According to the greater wild shape description, you're limited by your total Hit Dice, whereas a druid is limited by its druid levels only. So that level in monk counts making the limit 7. However, despite what it says, I'd rule that only druid and shifter level apply.

"This ability functions like the polymorph spell, except as noted here." (p37 PHB, first column) Go with what wild shape says: small and medium.

They keep their BAB, and base saves, their hit points change accordingly if their constitution changes.

I hope this clearifies things.
