Unfair Character Death?

So no - by logical extension (I hope) of my argument - there's no reason that the player should have known this was a trap. ... (to paraphrase) "sometimes PCs just die".

And with that, I think we're done here: we agree. :D

Points

1. Although the Evard's Black Tentacles effect could have been cast by a caster with greater invisibility and silent spells (who never materialized, by the way), a magical trap is still the most logical (and simple) conclusion.

2. The party never voiced any opinions about what the trap was or made any attempt to investigate its effects. They certainly did not go hunting for some invisible caster either.

3. Although I could have been more descriptive, I was under absolutely no rules obligation to reveal anything more than I did without a Search check. Even if the player made an incorrect conclusion about the nature of the trap, I had no reason to clarify it for him without some effort on his part.

4. In the future, I will provide additional information regarding triggered traps, but under no circumstance am I going to be as crass as to say: "You have triggered a magical trap" without some attempt at investigation by the PCs.

The DM is unfair in blaming the player for the character's death - I agree with the earlier post that said (to paraphrase) "sometimes PCs just die".
I don't blame him for his PC's death; I just refuse to accept blame for it. You're right, it was just bad luck.

I do blame him for not knowing what a magical trap is however.

He mistook a triggered spell effect for something other than a magical trap (or an invisible caster), and, when he was uncertain about what it actually was, he did not investigate or ask clarifying questions.

It's All Good

Anyways, I have resolved matters with the player and everything is now officially cool.

So, as Samuel L. Jackson (a.k.a. "Shaft Windu") would put it:

"This party's over ...."
