It is completely appropriate for fiction aimed at children to include terrible events or frights like Atreyu's horse Artax drowning in the Swamp of Sadness, the banshee from Darby O'Gill and the Little People, or Large Marge from Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Since y'all are on about tramatizing entertainment for kids, whats up with the 1986 Transformer movie? Like 80% of the cartoon autobots die in the first 5 min lol. Up until then they always fired at one another but never hit anything.

A lof of my favorite transformers died in movie, including my favorite Autobot and Decepticon: Prowl and Thundercracker, respectively. I still have to fight back the tears when I watch it.

Apparently the writers of the movie didn't understand the big deal with replacing all the characters with new ones UNTIL after the movie when kids were pretty traumatized. When you hit the time of Beast Wars (or Beasties for you Canadians), Hasbro and Mainframe Entertainment finally realized that it was better to give old characters "upgrades" that made you want to buy the new versions of the character. That didn't stop them from killing off some characters in the show but usually not the core cast of good guys or the more popular bad guys.

They did this BECAUSE of Transformers the Move, which was before the GI Joe Movie. Seriously. Watch the Toys That Made Us on Netflix where they talk about Transformers.

Hasbro had ceased production of the figures for many of the Transformers who would be killed off in the movie and the movie was to introduce new characters for kids to purchase. Hasbro got a lot of backlash for killing Optimus Prime and I'm not sure how successful their marketing effort was. I stopped buying Transformers before I ever saw the movie, but they continued coming up with new gimmicks for the toyline until the early 1990s.

I actually thought the Optimus death was pretty great for a story beat. He went out like a bad ass, and died a hero that is deserving of his stature. I dont think they needed to murder unceremoniously the rest of the cast though.

As a child of the 70s, the greatest toys of all time were the OG Star Wars action figures... which worked perfeectly with the Micronauts. The pinnacle Star Wars toy greatness appeared in Woman's Day magazine on November 20, 1978. I don't know anyone who actually ended up having a parent build one... but it was great just seeing it in print.
