The animated Starship troopers is quite good imo.

But ST gets a pass from me because I’m a huge SF military fiction fan. From ST or Enders Game through all those Niven and Pournelle collaborations to the newer stuff like Pacific Rim and Old Man’s War, I’m just a huge fanbois of the genre. Totally a guilty pleasure.

I know most of it is crap. But it’s my kind of explodey fun crap. :)

I really like the 5e Basic Rules. The presentation in the Essentials Kit (Icespire) is really good. I’d love to be able to buy just the soft bound book to hand out.

I’m weird. I like simpler. What can I say.
I’m the same. The lighter the better. It really is surprising that everyone making 5E variants is going heavier on the rules. I don’t know of anyone actively going lighter. Which is a damned shame.

Yeah. I have been kicking around for a while what an actual Basic 5e would look like.

I think that the first thing which would need to be done is to just remove subclasses and make sure the base classes are balanced enough without them to work. You allow one, even if it’s the one one, and people will clamor for more.

If nothing else, that would definitely ramp up the lethality of 5e, which is a common complaint that I see here.

Alternatively, just make a “basic cleric”, “basic fighter”, etc subclass which is streamlined. I know some will say Champion and Thief fit that, but there’s not really an equivalent for clerics or wizards currently.

Verhoeven denied it being sattire, and that's probably why most don't consider it such. Verhoeven did admit to deconstruction. He wasn't aiming for humor, or so he claims, he was aiming to make the Federation look as bad as possible. Not all satire is deconstruction, and not all deconstruction is satire. He did, in one interview, make unkind assertions about fans of the film, too.

I am not familiar with that quote but it is pretty obvious to me this is a satire (though I am not quite sure where the line would be drawn between deconstruction and satire in this particular case). I have seen him say the movie was a commentary on fascism. Certainly would like to see the original quote though

I think a simpler 5e isn't found by deleting content but by killing the heavy exception based design, and by eliminating obtuse mechanics that segregate the rules action from the fictional action. (To-Hit rules are the shining example of that)

In other words, a simpler 5e is a 5e that eliminates how many times it has to tell a player no.
