Update on Damon's (lung cancer kid) condition

jester47

First Post
Damon is 3 going on 4 and he has lung cancer. He started Kemo about two weeks ago. He can't go outside or play with other kids as his immmune system is too fragile. His mother, a single mom, who just lost her father and Damon's father (divorced from his mother) is quitting his job and can't/wont help. Damon's chances for survival are really really slim. But I intend to give anything to bring that chance up.

With that in mind I am selling all of my D&D collection. The proceeds will go to help make it easier on Damon and his mother. Bidding on these auctions is probably the best way to help.

The ebay auctions can be found HERE.

If any of you want to help with direct donations, my PayPal account is jester47 at seattleu dot edu. Any money sent there with a note containing Damon's name will be forwarded to his mother. Let me know if you do by emailing me at beowulf47 at comcast dot net. Bidding on the auctions for selling my D&D collection will also help.

I have seen this community do wonderful things for its own and people not its own and that is why I come here. Chances are, without the heart you guys have, I would have walked a long time ago. I have seen what you guys can do, so that is why I ask.

I plan to post updates on Damon's condition as time goes on. As of this writing, Damon has had several surgeries and is in and out of the hospital to help deal with the effects of his kemo. He and his mother are moving out of their apartment that has bad ventillation and a mold problem. Yesterday they had to go back to the hospital because he had really low blood cell counts.

Thanks. I will post more updates and the auctions as they become avialable. With the hurricaine I know there are alot of other people that need help. So go where the heart leads you.

Aaron.

Read, Subscribed, and Bumped. Sorry to see you go, Jester, but if you don't enjoy it, and don't foresee a time when you will again, there's no point in continuing.

My best wishes go out to Damon. Lung cancer sucks, and 3-4 years-old is supposed to be fun. I earnestly hope he turns around.

I'll look for your auction.

Jester47, I hear you my friend, I hear you, and I understand totally. Going on 5 years ago, I too, almost walked away. Gaming a with close knit of friends, started to strangle me, my spirit and my creativity. I decide to burn all the bridges, and I was not kind in doing it. It sounds harsh, but mercy...it had to be done. To save what was left of my spark.

But you are also correct...there comes a time, when it is not fun anymore...that is what I saw with them...it became more of a chore, then a burden. But anyway, not to sour you more with a old tale. I will be watching for what you have to sell, especially to see what or any Greyhawk stuff you have.

Peace.

While I applaud the sentiment, I would suggest based on personal experience not getting rid of everything. Surely there are some things that remind you of the good times you had gaming -- your first PHB, or maybe a sourcebook for a campaign you really enjoyed. I've walked away from the hobby a couple times (burnout or life got too busy or whatever) but eventually I come back, and I really regret getting rid of some of those things that had sentimental value.

Man, I can't imagine having to live in a country in which one must pay out of pocket for chemotherapy for a 3 year old kid. I hope that people chip in and your auctions go well. I have a very young child myself, so I can imagine how terrifying this must be for the family, especially the mother.

Subscribed, and looking forward to the auctions.

I am selling my collection. The whole thing. In the coming weeks it will be on ebay and I will post the links here. The question that many of you might be asking is: Why?

Truth be told, for a while I have not felt like I was having fun playing this game. I have done everything I could to make it simpler, easier, and less time consuming. When I moved I put all of my books in boxes. When they got to my new house, they just sat. Then I read the quote from Ryan Dancy that stated "Its the best 20 minutes of fun you will have over 4 hours." That drove in another nail to my gaming coffin. Then I unpacked the books, and I could only feel that they were a burden and not an asset. I made plans for Gen Con and realised I was not going because I still liked the hobby, but rather I liked the people I was going to meet there. And this showed me that the reason I have still gamed these last two years was because it was an excuse to gather. I can do that without the game. And I can't play the game anymore. This GenCon is going to my goodbye to the game.

But what to do with the money?

This weekend, I learned about a kid named Damon Devine. Damon is 3 going on 4 and he has lung cancer. He started Kemo about two weeks ago. He can't go outside or play with other kids as his immmune system is too fragile. His mother, a single mom, just lost her father and Damon's father (divorced from his mother) is quitting his job and can't/wont help. Damon's chances for survival are really really slim. Great that you want to help others out with your proceeds, but from 25 years of gaming XP, let me offer you this advice, just keep it.

I went through a period when I hated D&D, mostly during the dreaded 2nd edition. I managed to keep the hard cover books, but to clean out the closet I threw out all of my dragon magazines issues 51-232, and a bunch of modules and such. Totally regret it now of course, and one day when your interest is rekindled, and it took 15 years for me, you will regret this too.

Of course it may not be as bad sine you are giving the proceeds to a good cause, but still, I think you will eventually miss them more than you know.
