Updating monsters

Considering there were five monster manuals for 3.5, I'm sure there are some cool things in there that would be nice to have in some of my adventures that are not in the 4e books. Are there any rules for adapting monsters from 3.5 to 4e or does anyone have some suggestions of the best way to go about it? I haven't really looked through them yet, so I don't have any specifics in mind, just looking for general guidelines.

the easiest would be if you had the adventure tools from ddi and find something similar and modify to fit the monster. do you have a specific 3.5 monster in mind?

Yeah, there really isn't any "rules" that one can apply in converting monsters from one edition to another - the way monsters (and characters, for that matter) are set up in 4th ed. is just too different.

So, it basically amounts to a series of gut checks. Personally, I would do the following:

1. Choose a general level for the monster (say, upper heroic, or mid paragon, etc.). This level will be based on the CR of the creature in 3.5, the level of similar creatures in 4th, and the needs of your campaign.

2. Decide which powers are most evocative of the creature. Choose 1-3 of them, 2-4 of them if elite, and 3-6 of them if a solo.

3. Decide what roles (controller, leader, lurker, brute, etc.) best fit the monster, based on the powers you have selected for it.

4. Flesh out the powers and convert them to the 4th ed. power format. Look at similar powers or similar creatures for guidance. Look at other creatures of similar level and roles to try to ensure that the damage and effects are appropriate.

5. Flesh out the rest of the monster.

In doing this, I can't recommend enough the D&D Monster builder - its a great tool and makes comparative analysis of monsters so much easier.

I've done a buttload of conversions- see the Monster Project link in my sig. I'm currently kind of on hiatus on the project, since all my earlier edition books are boxed up and will be for at least another couple of weeks.

On a related note, how do you export a monster from the Monster Builder to rtf?

I don't think you can... however, it is pretty easy to cut and paste a monster into a text program like word, then save it as an rtf. I know my friend does something similar (into power point) so as to get several monsters on a page for ease of reference when DMing encounters.

I THOUGHT I saw a thing in there somewhere claiming you could...

Wait, you can cut and paste from the Monster Builder? How, with keyboard shortcuts?

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what I get for not reading the f'ing manual.

If you right click on the monster's listing on the left side of the main panel, an option to copy to RTF will show up, then just paste where ever you need it.
