"Upgrading" soon, advice needed

the iPhone and iPod Touch stylus is your finger. Then you never lose it....

My problem with that is one of fine control. With a "traditional" stylus, I can control images down to a pixel or so in size- great for fine work.

OTOH, the size of the "tip" the stylus controls is variable in size, so I suppose its possible that the tip size is variable with devices that use only fingers for control.

Do you know if it has that capability?

I sympathize with the OP to some extent. Seems like a lot of folks are really quick to cough up an extra $50 a month or so for data plans. And they're often paying that for a broadband connection at home.

Which brings me to clear.com. Anyone else got it? Can they recommend it? Might not be viable for a smartphone, but should work for a netbook.

I checked out clear. I fail to see how this is much different or better than Verizon or AT&T wireless or Internet.

Anyway, I doubt the OP would want the mandatory data fees.

Yeah- those fees are something that's seriously ticking me off.

My PDA cost me a little over $200 or so, and before it started having issues, did everything I wanted it to do. (It still does, but it does it poorly and only after many repeated commands.) That's worked out to about $60/year over the time I've owned it...and falling.

Now unless I can track something down that is to my liking, I'm looking at smartphones that may only do 2 of my 3 major demands...and annual costs of $240-360 on top of my regular cellphone fees.

This is part of why part of this thread's title is in quotes- this doesn't sound or feel like an upgrade to me.

See, I'd just say in your case to go to Amazon.com and shop for a new PDA. Or head to CNet first and check out some reviews.

It's 4G WiMax. For a cost that's equal to or cheaper than what you'd pay just for tethered cable connectivity at your little home hotspot, you have connectivity that's faster and mobile. Now do you see?

Get a 1kg netbook, and you've got a PDA with screamin' fast connection speeds.

I've looked there.

What they have listed for my model, for instance, starts at about $180 more than what I paid for mine back in 04 or so. And they stopped making that model in 05 or 06 as I recall. IOW, even their "new" ones are 3-4 years old.

And that may be the option I have to choose.

I'd be fine buying one of the other, less expensive models like the HP or Asus...but I can't find one to try out and see if it actually does what I want it to do. The reviews are great, but they don't tell you if you can use a stylus to draw a picture- its just not something most people would do.

I dig. However, WiMax is taking a very long time to take off. You can see that Clear is not available in many places yet.
