AAARRRRGH!

I haven't yet updated or replaced my PDA, but over the holidays, I upgraded my desktop computer from a circa 2003 G3 Mac to a brand spanking new 21.5" iMac.

It works like a charm, except...the people from whom I bought it apparently didn't listen to me when I told them what the admin account & password was supposed to be (I had them do all the data transfer/rescue from the old machine), which means I can't install the most current version of MS Office...or anything requiring similar authorization.

And they seem to not have given me my OS install disks so I can reinstall with a new admin & password.

And who wants to bet they can't recall what they set as the password themselves?

If they don't know, try some of the obvious ones, like "password" or "god" or simply leave it blank. You could also try the username itself as the password. I've seen some places also just use "a" as the password for an machine they don't care about.

Data transfer from your old Mac is a piece of cake, assuming the old Mac has a firewire cable. Just plug the 2 Macs together and run Applications> Utilities> Migration Assistant. As for the OS install disks, you can grab the combo OS X 10.6/iLife/iWork set for $169.

Apple should be announcing their tablet and possibly other new goodies, like a new iPhone OS, on the 26th.

The data transfer was just part of the service we got through the Apple Store- it also included a few hundred hours of tutorials if we asked for it.

Given that my parents aren't too savvy, it was a good thing.

As for the password thing, I've tried all kinds of stuff- no love. I'm probably going to have to do a little work with the System Install disc to reset the passwords by brute force.

But you did ask them, right? You are not just assuming they won't know the password or have the disks and therefore not even ask them...

Bye
Thanee

I use an iPod Touch as a PDA, and highly recommend it. It does everything I need, including contacts, detailed notes, calendaring, GTD time management, and various little utilities. IMO it's the best PDA on the market that doesn't require a monthly data plan. Its especially good for Mac users, since it synchs with the Mac's email, calendar, and contacts programs.

I don't use a stylus, so I can't say how good the Pogo Stylus is, but it's only $10 on Amazon so it may be worth it to try. The iPod touch is available at Target, Bestbuy, and other stores, all of which have generous return policies.

It sounds like the sketching is your main sticking point. There are lots of great apps in the app store, and no doubt there are several good drawing/painting apps that will give you all the settings you need, and zoom-in for pixel-level drawing and editing.

I actually have asked them about the password, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

However, I have gotten my hands on my install discs, so even if they can't remember, I can do a little workaround.

I hadn't considered the possibility of an app for the iTouch w/zoom...but even so, I think it might be kind of hard to see what I'm doing with my fat finger in the way... Still, it merits some research- thanks!
