Thanks guys - sorry I didn't reply last nght, but whe I got back from the game I got caught up with the WotC interview stuff.
There are four arena fights in all, so there's plenty in this thread to keep me going! What I did last night (for the first one) was have walls spring up out of the ground, dividing the arena into four segments diagonally after the 2nd round, then after the 3rd, those walls went down and new ones came up dividing the arena into four segments in a cross shape. Rinse and repeat.
It had a great effect on matching up small fights which the players wouldn't have chosen (the bard getting stuck in the same segment as the enemy wildshaped, raging barbarian/druid was fun!)
Plus I added some pit trap type things shich collapsed automatically at the end of the second round, catching anyone standing on the areas (which were 6x6 squares each, four of them).
