how about having the arena floor covered in oil, and the only equipment allowed are loincloths and steel nerves?

Hey, it worked for the Ancient Greeks... :D

How about a circle of death formed by the vortex of teeth spell? It has a 5' radius safe zone in the center, and anyone in the vortex takes force damage (reflex for half). Strategy can include fighting for the center and keeping your opponents outside of that, or simply killing the opponent so you can step in the middle until the spell ends. Since they're taking damage each round, I think the concentration rules for spells would apply...

Be a real rat bastard. Use innocents.

Chain them to barricades in the middle of the combat zone.
Hang them on thin ropes above boiling oil pits.
Tie them to the ammunition dumps.
Noosed to a pulley system with the tiger's cage door on the other end.
Dowsed in oil.
Staked inside a by a permanent darkness.

Tentacles.

Use a ship/water based arena but throw in a tentacled beastie.

Monkeys. Everythings better with monkeys.
Actually dire apes. Put the PC's in the middle of a maze and then flood the maze with a score of dire apes.

Probably too late by now, but make the arena shaped like a funnel. The "sand" is actually small ball bearings imbedded in the floor. Balance checks needed to move around the arena, along with climb checks to move towards the outer edges of the arena.

An electrical current runs through the ball bearings. When you strike someone with a metal weapon, you add electric shock damage to your attack (+1d6). Flip side is if you strike someone wearing metal armor, you receive electric shock damage in the same amount. If you go for more than 2 rounds without discharging into someone else, you take 1d6 points of damage. Combatants with electric resistance take and can give no additional damage from the charge.

If everyone fails their checks and slides to the center, they all sit in the middle shocking each other to death.

Do this to the participants:

Chain some of each team to spots of the combat zone (10-feet long chains).

Hang some of each team on sliding ropes (so that they can attack landbound characters) connected to cables above the battlefield (so that they can slide by pushing on the walls).

Add a BIG tiger who can be swayed away by Intimidate checks (he isn't willing to put himself into a lot of trouble killing because he's recently fed).

Let the games begin!
