Use Magic Device and Animal Friendship

If a rogue used a scroll of Animal Friendship, and emulated a Caster Level of 12, is there any reason that this instantaneous spell wouldn't allow him to Friendshipise a 12HD Dire Bear?

If the rogue had 12 HD as well, I don't see why not. He would, of course, have a bit of trouble communicating with the beastie, unless he had a Speak with Animals amulet or some such.

It immediately learns some 3 tricks per point of intelligence. That's 6 tricks for a bear.

That means he can order it to attack, guard, follow, back down etc.

Note that it could be argued that maintaining the animals is an ongoing caster level check. Thus the rogue would probably have to reroll the UMD every hour.

Yeah - even though AF has a listed duration of Instantaneous, in some ways it behaves like a Permanent.

He can only gain 12 HD if he buys a Scroll with Caster Level of 12, regerdless of his UMD Result. (If he rolls to low, it might fail, if he rolls "too high", it simply gives him the HD for the Caster Level of the Scroll...)

It does even work without the UMD when he buys a Ring of Animal Friendship, which is, admittedly, a bit more expensive... (9.000 gp?)

And if the Rogue continues to meet the HD requirements of the spell.
If a Druid fails to meet the HD requirements the animal is no longer a companion, same for the Rogue.
There is no "emulate HD" for UMD.

I don't read the spell to immediately grant knowledge of tricks. Rather, it says you can teach the animal tricks. I think you still have to take the time to do so.

That said, I think the training time for a druid's animal companion should be a lot less than as set forth in the Handle Animal skill description.
