use magic device & psionic items.

could a character who is skilled in 'use magic device' attempt to use psionic devices, or would you require them to purchase ranks in 'use psionic device'?

for instance, an item that needed the expendature of a psionic focus, could a character with UMD make the check to emulate the class feature, or would you claim this is beyond the borders of what UMD could do (emulate magic) and they'd need to check out UPM (emulate psionics)

i'm thinking that i may let it fly, but impose a -2 on the check, to represent manipulation of a fairly unknown energy; although strikingly similar, i'd figure that UMD and UPD are different beasts.

RAW, you need ranks in each to use each type of item. I've allowed transparancy with it (can use either with either type of item and at no penalty) for a few months now, haven't had any major issues yet.

IMC, we've merged Use Magical Device & Use Psionic Device into a single skill: Use Mystical Device.

Works fine for us.

I'm running a campaign where I've swiped psionics for the magic used by the pretender gods.

Anyway to the point, I've gone for upping the DCs of UMD checks to use Psionic Items and for Spellcraft checks etc.

It's been 10 higher so far, makes it possibly but preserves some of the "psionics is diffferent" I wanted.
