Use Magic Device

Fail to activate, you mean?

If you fail to activate the scroll (unless you get a mishap, which can't happen with UMD anyway), nothing happens... the scroll is not expended. You can try again next time you have a standard action available (or whatever the activation time of the scroll is).

The only restriction on trying again is if you roll a 1.

Try Again: Yes, but if you ever roll a natural 1 while attempting to activate an item and you fail, then you can’t try to activate that item again for 24 hours.

I dont know what the scroll is yet and my first attempt i failed. So thats why i was wondering.

Yes, you can keep trying. Each attempt just takes longer than a check to activate an item.

Decipher a Written Spell: This usage works just like deciphering a written spell with the Spellcraft skill, except that the DC is 5 points higher. Deciphering a written spell requires 1 minute of concentration.

Right. In 3E, UMD to activate a scroll had a fixed DC, and provided a caster level based on your check result, allowing for the possibility of a successful UMD check, but a mishap through insufficient caster level.

In 3.5, UMD to activate a scroll has a variable DC dependent on the scroll's caster level, and thus you either successfully activate the scroll, or you don't activate the scroll at all. No chance of mishap.

Yay! Confirms my hope. Thanks Hypersmurf!

UMD and UPD are different skills.
So, if using magic-psionic transparency, then either skill can be used for either type of device, but combined ranks are a no-no? That's a but hinky, but, oh well.

Err... No.

If you want to use a magic device, you use Use Magic Device.

If you want to use a psionic device, you use Use Psionic Device.

They are separate skills - in all respects.

Note that magic-psionic transparency is the "base state" of D&D Psionics. If you could use the skills in such a fashion, each skill would say something to that effect.

Really? Hmm, could've sworn I read a post (either here or on Wizard's CO forum) that said magic-psionic transparency includes having UMD & UPD be interchangeable. I'll have to try to look that up.

Thanks.

There was a post here just a few days ago, in one of the "Psions are Overpowered!" threads that dealt with the psionic-magic transparency, but it mentioned how, even with transparency, they were separate skills in all respects. I'll look for that one for you, as well. :)

No, I don't think that was it. I usually pass on those threads because I disagree. I'll be heading over to the Wizards boards later, so I'll check there. But thanks again.
