Clothing: Entertainer’s Outfit, Monk’s Outfit, Noble’s Outfit: I didn't see any bonuses for these- what do they do? I mean, why would someone want any of these things that don't grant anything?

To be more explicit: not everything you can buy provides bonuses, but that doesn't mean it isn't useful. Let's say your hero wants to infiltrate a noble's masquerade ball. "How do I do that?" you ask your DM.

"Well," says your DM, "are you going to wear your blood-stained armor? You'd never sneak in with that."

"Good point," you say. "Time to buy some nobles' clothing!"

I love arguing rules as written for absurdity's sake. There is no benefit, per the RAW, for wearing clothes, nor drawback for not wearing them. A cold weather outfit does help in cold weather, but normally, no need.

Of course, rules as written there's nothing saying I cannot cut a pocket in my thigh and store my gear in there, so why even have belts?

Actually, rules as written, I don't have a body. I have a weight, but apparently that's just based on how much generic "Me Matter" there is floating in the 5-ft. cube I occupy.

Thanks guys. Sorry for the stupid questions, but the manuals are lacking in the "1st ever session of D&D tips&how-to's". And I'm at my 1st session.

Are you the DM or a player?

The DM needs to know the rules and part of his role is to "teach the game" DMG pg 5.

Clothing helps with disguise checks I believe. It may not be explicit, but wearing a monk's robe will give you a bonus (or prevent a penalty) to a disguise that involves you trying to look like a monk.

My Urban Ranger/Rogue character has a full set of clothing for every occasion, in case he needs to disguise himself as something that could use one of those outfits.

Also, don't you get an outfit for free at first level? And don't they come with things like pockets for example?

I like this game :)

1. There are no benefits to weary clothes, but that doesn't mean ther are no drawbacks for not wearing them. DMs would be well within the rules to give circumstances penalties to a myriad of checks for not wearing clothes. As for environmental effects, the Wilderness and Environment section details additional penalties for direct contact and prolonged contact with adverse temperature affects. The DM is free to interpret these clauses, and could rule that no clothing makes direct contact much more likely, and that prolonged contact occurs much sooner without clothing.

2. Well, healing yourself up to full hitpoints would presumably heal the hole and lead to problems. Even if you rule that normal hit point curage wouldn't be an issue, you would need to be very careful to make sure no one ever casts Regenerate on you.

3. The text for "dead" states that "The character’s soul leaves his body," so you had to have one at some point. Of course, whether your body is the one that you move around with your ability scores, or the one that you keep in your backpack is probably still arguable. :)

They provide more of a role-playing benefit rather than a mechanical benefit. Same with things like good meals or lodging. The section can safely be ignored by most players... even the weight doesn't matter (unless you carry extra clothing in your backpack) because the clothing you are wearing isn't counted.
