User Name and Avatars: Origin Stories

dragoner

KosmicRPG.com
Used to design wargames ~20 years ago; one campaign I made for Panzer General 2, "The Great Patriotic War" depicting the Soviet side using Russian, Polish, Romanian, and other sources, was recently added to a browser game from somebody in Czechia.

On the forums, I decided to call myself "dragoner" because it sounded cool, my great grandfather was a captain of dragoons in the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it means "dragoon" in German.
This is from the earlier thread.

Avatar comes from a game ~15 years ago where mice had infested a shipment of grain on a spaceship, and during the roll some survived after the cargo hold was opened to vacuum. One of the players found this image, and I started using it. Prior to this it was CL Moore's Shambleau by Kelly Freas:

My username comes from an NPC I created for an Al-Qadim campaign the better part of 30 years ago; it was an illithid from the tunnels in the al-Suqut Mountains outside the city of Ajayib.

My avatar is Karl Waller's most excellent drawing of an urban ogre, which to me has always been the ultimate symbol for the Al-Qadim setting.

Well, I thought about using Snarf from Thundercats and using an anagram of Gary's last name...but found someone had snitched it...and used something a little close to it.

Just kidding...Gary actually said he'd beat me over the head if I tried to make that my Username, and seeing he had a rubber duck in hand at the time...thought better of it.

So, then ended up using the same moniker I had already used for some time before...luckily no one had taken that one. (been beaten to it on other forums though, so just because it has my username...doesn't mean it's me. It seems a little more popular than I would have imagined).

I used it in my character names, in my hacks (yes, there are hacks that have this moniker found within them, even some original cheats in games and such, as well as hidden in texts from long ago books and other things for those who want to hunt them down), and anyplace I wanted to be anonymous.

Unfortunately, a certain bounty hunter found me and now you see him as the avatar of my demise. He actually looks cooler than he really is. In reality he got bopped on his jetpack and flew into a pit. I think he caused the creature in the pit to burp and have indigestion which helped him escape it later...but...I mean...going out in that manner was just a let down.

PS: I think the bounty hunter was a Tom Petty fan as well. I couldn't really tell as the last I saw of him was him going...

"AAAAAAHHHHH" in deep regret, and me being stuck chained to some wierd ship that blasts off into the cosmos...but...I suppose that's what he meant.

PPS: And obviously 9/10...or is that 99/100 of my post is tongue in cheek, and joshing around. The other 1%...well...that's deadly serious....if deadly could be serious.

Pablo is my real first name and M, AZ are the first letters of my two family surnames (first from my mom, second from my dad, the prevalent name configuration in Brazil).

The avatar is something I found online maybe 20 years ago. If I recall correctly, its from a company that made funny t-shirts. And I love coffee, so...
