Using Scrolls while Invisible

Invisibility states that gear becomes invisible with the target and cannot be seen without the aid of See Invisibility or similar. Nowhere in the description does it say the target can see himself or his equipment.

The 'Scrolls' section clearly states that the caster needs to be able to read the scroll to activate it.

Ergo, unless your wizard is also under the effect of See Invisibility (or similar); when he's invisible he can't use Scrolls.

Though I'd probably allow a wizard who was willing to invest an additional feat into it to be able to scribe scrolls in Braille.

We've always houseruled that an invisible creature can see itself and it's carried gear.

Note, if the invisible creature picks up the scroll after becoming invisible, the scroll remains visible.

Although according to the SRD he can put it in a pocket or inside his cloak and it will be invisible...

Right, but that makes it harder to read :)

The hypothetical character will be more interested in the opposite effect - if he takes an invisible scroll out of his pack and drops it, it will become visible... and remain so when he picks it up, allowing him to read it.

From the description of the Invisibility sphere spell:

Those affected by this spell can see each other and themselves as if unaffected by the spell

The mass invisibility spell has the reverse wording

Individuals in the group cannot see each other

but I'd reason that the difference is that the invisibility sphere spell creates one invisibility effect whereas the mass invisibility spell creates multiple effects. So, someone under the effect of an invisibiltiy spell can probably see their own scroll - IMO.

I sincerely doubt that this is as intended. If you couldn't see yourself, you'd have problems doing anything at all. Even something as simple as walking would become a challenge.

Even if the spell as written doesn't say so, it _should_ say you to become invisible to others. Otherwise the spell would be pretty useless.

It sounds like for sure there will be no problems if the individual in question draws the scroll forth (move action), drops the scroll (free action), picks up the scroll (move action), and then reads the now-visible parchment (standard action or longer depending on spell), correct?

That would certainly work, but since the books seem silent on the issue, I'd just say that the invisible character can see himself and his own stuff. Without a specific reference to a penalty applied to the PC for being invisible, assume there is none.

Oh yea how do blind people walk, they can't see themselves :P You can still see the ground and balance yourself, you don't need to see yourself in order to walk.

Usually I rule that you can indeed see yourself, but it is as if you see yourself on the ethereal plane so you are dulled in color and what not.
