Using the Psionics Handbook

Sniper o' the Shrouds
Okay, so I actually read through most of the bottom 5 thread and although I could post, everyone knows what I don't like and why already. God knows I'm nothing if not vocal.

But Holy Bovine put out a complaint about never getting to use the PsiHB as DM or player, so I thought we could lend a hand to the Sacred Cow (no, the other one).

I haven't been able to use them as a player yet.

As a DM, I have put them in a couple different of the WotC adventures I've run...

Spoiler space for Speaker in Dreams and Deep Horizon (there's more after the spoiler, just look for the allcaps announcement below).

I took out a cabal of sorcerers and replaced them with a cabal of psions in Speaker in Dreams. The adventure centers around a psionic baddy, I figured it made more sense than alienist sorcerers. I also gave the baddy two psionic warrior bodyguards. It was the group's first encounter with psionics. I altered displays somewhat.

In Deep Horizon, I modified the group of bad guy adventurers that are working at cross-purposes to the party. Since the party had more than 4 players, I added one bad guy for each additional player. Those were a psion and a psionic warrior.

END OF SPOILER

My basic recommendations are to consider a psion of some type in place of a sorcerer or bard, and a psionic warrior in place of a monk, barbarian, or ranger; play up the mystery if the players haven't been exposed to psionics; and decide what you're going to do with displays.

Piratecat puts the smell of burning metal when someone is manifesting close to the PCs. I use a variety of different displays, from the mental itchiness-hair raising on the back of the neck to the sound of breaking glass when someone manifests something that breaks the planar barrier between the astral and prime. Make sure that it is different from spellcasting in some way.

Edit: Oh, and forget about psionic combat. If you want, make stunning blast a 5th level power that everyone gets for free. That's the only one that really has good effect in a non-psionic campaign.

Does that help?

Also, we're just now starting it, but I'm making the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil psionic. The primary bad guys are now a cult of githyanki (so occassional clerics become githyanki). I'm also planning on being generous with the psionic template. After we get going through it some I'll probably start posting specifics on my personal site since I'm still working out the details now. At that point I'll dust this thread off and post a direct link. ;)
