Hey Halivar mate! :)

Might I suggest OpenOffice.org? It's a free office suite funded by Sun, and IMHO, is much better than MS Office. You don't have to "borrow" your friend's copy of Office, since it will open MS office files just fine.

Just thought I'd mention for the sake of the copyright conscious... ;)

I already installed the latest MS Office 2003 and its working great. So no worries there. ;)

I have been examining xanatos latest build of the spreadsheet though there are a few minor bugs but it looks pretty good start.

U_K: I had a question... you put Alternate Form for lycanthropes and vampires at +0.2. What do you consider the Phasm's Alternate Form ability to be (it can mimic anything Large sized or smaller). What about something like a greater Doppleganger: Medium-size or smaller?

Thanks in advance. V4 is pretty clear, moreso than 3... and if school wasn't killing me, I'd be enjoying going through it right now :(

I'll have to check what I gave the Phasm's Alternate Form in my notes...I'll get back to you on that.

Hey! You take care of your schooling first and foremost. My stuff will still be here when you get the important things out of the way. ;)

Silver Rule Question

Heya UK!

I just realized I haven't bugged you in a while. You're due. :D

I'm working on a ruleset that's based on d20 Modern, which has very different base classes and class advancement.

Should I:

1) Recalculate each class (somehow) to determine what % advantage each class has over monsters, average, and reconstruct the Silver Rule;

2) Assume that Modern PCs ~ D&D PC's, and apply your 85% advantage Silver Rule anyway;

3) Throw out the Silver rule as an unnecessary complication, and embrace 1 character level = 1CR.

I feel like the Silver rule is kind of arbitrary anyhow; without knowing how you decided, for example, that a fighter's BAB is worth exactly 6.5%, I am afraid to put too much stock in the Silver Rule.

Follow up question: If I did throw out the Silver Rule, that means that monster CRs will be a little higher than they should be, which means that they are not actually as tough as the CR indicates. Thus, if I throw out the Silver Rule, it is a tip in favor of the PCs, right?

I meant to email you about something, I'll do that a bit later. ;)

I'm familiar with it.

Well the reason the core classes arrived at 116% on average was because I rated everything comparable to feats; where one feat = +0.2 CR.

It would be possible to revalue everything to 85% of its current value and then you wouldn't need the silver rule at all (eg. every feat would be +0.17 CR). The problem with that is that a lot of stuff goes into tiny fractions and the whole things just not as smooth (I mean the Spell-like abilities are just going to get ridiculous).

My suggestion would be to revalue the Classes in d20 Modern and then see where you stand. Anything less than CR 10.6 at 10th-level and I would just ignore 'a' silver rule entirely.

Thats correct.

Looking forward to it.

I'm familiar with [d20 Modern]

Theoretically it should be easier to "calculate" d20M classes, right? No class abilities-- just feats and talents every other level.

You have to calculate: Hit Die, BAB, skill points, saving throws, Defense bonus, and Reputation. Feat and talent progression is "equal" for all classes.

I'd be surprised if any one d20M class came out with a statistical advantage over any other (though personally I am fond of the Fast hero...)

Make that first thing in the morning (my time). I got caught up reading a thread about the JLA*Avengers comic for an hour or two tonight. :o

It all seems fairly straightforward stuff using the class design parameters, but if you need some help I am always here. :)

Hi ciaran mate! :)

Sorry for the delay.

I treated the Phasms Alternate Form ability just as it says in the book. Polymorph cast at 15th-level (Its HD).

I would just use Polymorph cast at level = HD. Or Shapechange if the creature gains all the SU abilities.
