Vacuum Genasi Suck!

Well, now that I got your attention... ;)

I was looking at Dragon Magazine Issue #297, page 62, there's a list of 8 new Para-Genasi and such.

Now, all of these are +1 ECL. However, looking over their stats, it seems that they don't exactly seem on the same par.

Anaxi get +2 Int, -2 Wis, Sonic and Cold res 5, Calm Emotions Spell like, and +2 to Diplomacy and Spot.

Cansin recieve +2 Int, +2 Cha, Acid and Fire res 5, Entropy Shield as a spell-like, and +2 to Bluff and Spot checks.

Dust Para- get +4 Dex, +2 Int, -2 Con and Cha, a Dust cloud effect (All people who enter recieve -2 to checks/saves/attacks if fail save, and it grants concealment), the Breathless ability, and +1 vs Dust effects.

Other races get either several stat adjustments (Some at +4), for only a -2 to usually an int stat.

Does anyone feel some of them don't measure up to their others? For example, the Smoke recieves similar to Dust, except only a +2 to dex and int, and -2 to cha, an effect like smoke pyrotechnics, but he doesn't get Breathless, either.

For some of these, they just scream spellcaster (Like the Cansin, who recieves +2 to Int and Cha, but no minuses), with limited problems.

I realize some thing that the Genasi aren't really good comparisons, either, since two of them aren't as powerful compared. How do you treat them? Feel about them? To me, some of these seem underpowered for a +1 race, while others seem like a Steal (Cansin and Dust, paticularly). Did you do anything to balance them?

How have they worked in your campaign, furtheremore? Have you used them? What were the plots regarding them?

And, just for kicks, because I tricked you with the thread, anyone want to do a Vacuum Para-Genasi? :) (Or, even cooler, one from the Positive or Negative plane)

While pie is important to all of us, it doesn't answer any questions. :)

More seriously, IMNSHO, it seems that ECL+1 creatures are a real pain to handle. Look at the Genasis in the FRCS, do you really think an Earth Genasi is worth his ECLcompared to a human? While an Air Genasi is "probably" worth it (breathless -even better than the waterbreathing of the Water Genasi-, levitate once per day), compare him to the Tiefling, or the Hobgoblin from the MM, none of them seems to be on the same scale. This is what I call a lack of balance. But as I said, I understand ECL+1 creature must be very difficult to smith without unbalancing the game with the ECL+0 base races.

Sure but not all pies are equal, aren't they? Do you really feel you can do the same thing with an apple pie and a strawberry pie? And what about the meat pies, don't you think they are out of context?

Phhhttttpppppp! :D

Well, that's the question that I'm asking. Do they all seem balanced? Does anyone have any thoughts on How to balance them according?

And, simply because this is the General forum, sharing some stories on how they've made it into your campaign, what you've done with them, etc. :)

Depends on how well they are made. If each person sharing the pie is to get an equal share of filling, the pie should be symmetrical, and so you should balance on its center. If the pie is broken (e.g. because the crust is too fragile so it cracks when you pick it up) then it becomes more difficult.

<RANT>My players are real munchkins when it comes to pies. Two sessions ago, I gave them well balanced +2 cherry pies (they are 8th level), and they deliberately set out to break them. First combat we come accross BAM! pie peices everywhere. My poor NPC didn't stand a chance. </RANT>
