Vacuum Genasi Suck!

Ok, I am not an expert on genasi by any means, but here are my 2 coppers.

Of COURSE they are not all 100% balanced with each other. They can never be. There are too many differences and factors to consider. Same goes for all the races.

And there is no way a system such as "ECL +x" is ever going to get them in balance. The system is just not "granular" enough. I mean, for the stronger genasi, what are you gonna do? Add +2? That's probably too much. For the weaker ones, add +.5 (!) ? See what I mean? the ECL+1 therefore is going to represent a WIDE range of abilities and strengths. Consider ECL+1 to mean: "Ok, it's a little better than a regular core race, but not quite as good as an ECL+2 race." There is a LOT of room to play with in that range.

I suppose if you wanted a better system to penalize the "powerful" races in comparison to each other, it may have been better to have something like an XP penalty. Some might get -1% to earned XPs, while others get -2%, -3%, -8%, or what have you. Heck, I suppose you could then theoretically give WEAKER races, like kobolds, an XP BONUS! But anyway, people would still argue that a given race's XP adjustment was off or something.

Bottom line? Stop trying to get the most bang for your ECL buck. And just take the race that you think would be coolest to ROLEPLAY.

(P.S. I meant all that in the friendliest way possible, from one gamer to another. :D )

Hey, I'm not trying to get the best Bang. Just trying to figure out how to balance some o' 'em, to be a little more Even. :) Maybe give 'em a touch more umph, to compare.

But, I'm also looking for how they've worked in YOUR campaign.

And, really, Kobolds are Not weaker.

-4 Str, +2 Dex.
Small size.
+1 Nat armor.
30ft.
+2 to Search and Trapmaking and some other skills.
60ft Darkvision.
Light sensitivity (I know, but there is a feat to fix that).
Favored Class: Sorceror.

Really, Not a bad race, and pretty balanced.

I'm playing an ooze para gensai and I really don't think it's worth the ecl +1. They get +4 con, -2 cha, grease 1/day, +2 save verse acid attacks. Not very impressive for one level lost. :(

Ok, kobolds were a bad example. I just threw them out there because they are...ah...uh...tiny. Yeah, that's it.

But I trust you got my meaning anyway. ;)

Holy cats, Cro. Tell me you are joking! I think those bonuses sound awesome. Seriously. Far better than some ohter ECL+1 races.

The con bonus is nice. Grease once a day is okay, but it is based off of the Cha score, and the -2 to cha hurts this. If your Cha is lower then 11, you can't use this ability and the DC is only 11+Cha modifier. The +2 on saves verse Acid really doesn't come up that often. Yesterday was the first time when we fought a Fiendish Green Dragon which should have killed us, but that's another story.

Edit: I forgot the Nightvision 60ft, which is a decent ability.

Huh. Where does it say this? I don't think spell like abilities have the stat reqs that spells do, but I'm not really sure, so if there is any information on the subject, I'd like to see it.
