vampire hunter

i have been inited to join a local game and need some hints.

the game is set in 1700 and we are to create vampire-hunter characters. my starting point is that i can have anything in the three core books, and any combination of CR + lvl= 5.

if anyone has suggestions i am interested

The ECL hit to your spells and turning as a cleric aren't worth the benefit you'd get from the monster race.

Are you looking for some powergaming advice?

Take a low CR monster and advance it by hit dice, this does not up the CR much but adds hit points and BAB, you can get a pretty good humanoid warrior this way. I'd have to review the CR advancement rules to give you specific advice though.

Find out though what level such a character would advance as, normally while monster HD do not up CR much they do up level for advancing.

While you can't go wrong with a Cleric type, I would also look at either a Paladin, or possibly a monk (maybe a good ole Human Paladin/Monk combo). Usually when fighting Undead Saving Throws and SR (if you can get it) are pretty important. Both the Paladin and the monk offer lots of benefits to saving throws. The only problem is that you needs lots of good stats to play them effectively.

Fifth-level vampire hunters. I'm thinking that whatever combo you choose, you're soon going to be changing it to Vampire Spawn, so don't sweat it

Ooh, you could play a spawn who broke free from his master and now hunts down other vampires, you'll be undead so you will be immune to most of the vampire powers.

I would say be a LG kobold clr/mnk.

Hmm. Well let's consider the attributes you'll want as a vampire hunter.

Darkvision, but able to go out in the light.
Turn undead is a must.
Healing wouldn't hurt.
You'll need hand to hand combat.
Good speed is also a must.
You'll want speed, especially at higher levels.
Flight won't hurt either.

I would go with a LG clr/mnk for the class.

As for the race I would go with something that has flight and darkvision, but nothing above an ecl 1.

So we get flight and darkvision from the race and a clr2/mnk 2.

If that is possible.
