Very cool. The new system is really similar to d20.

I woulldn't go so far to say it really similar, and I think that the WW fanboys would flame you in seconds! ;) Having said that they seem to have expanded the scope of their Merits to include some very feat-like mechanics.

Really though we haven't seen enough to make any hard and fast decisions about the new World of Darkness and its games.

What I find interesting is the way WW are drip-feeding information about their new games. It reminds me very much of the early days of ENWorld save they are doing it in a far more calculating manner - and who can blame them, I wonder how much it would have cost WoTC to stir up the kind of feeding frenzy that preceded 3e?

Does it use polyhedral dice or just d10s?

Does it have levels or is it still completely skill based?

d10s, still skill based

Combat is structured almost exactly same though and the new system has Merits (feats?), a Defense score (AC?), and a move and standard action in a turn (round?) of combat.

Very similar. The biggest difference is the d10 and the rolling of several to get successes. The number of success you get could be compared to a d20 roll in the d20 system. You need to get a certain number of successes to do something and unfavorable circumstances (Defense in combat) subtracts from your successes. This is pretty much how the Storyteller system always worked, but characters never had a Defense score.

Different dice, but the core concept is still the same.

Man, I'd be tempted to play their games if only they would get rid of dice pools. That system is so wrong in so many ways that it's chilling.

I would, and I did. I mentioned it over on the WW boards. It seems somewhere along the way, the WW fans started realizing that d20 really does handle combat well.

:) It has a merit called Finesse Fighting that allows you to use Dexterity instead of Strength for some weapons...

I've been absorbing every scrap of info about the new system. That, coupled with this demo release that details the combat system in depth, paints a really clear picture of how the system works.

I'm surprised how much WW is leaking. They typically say something like: "We are working on the coolest thing the world has ever seen! You can't imagine how good it is! It'll forever re-define role-playing! And you'll learn more about it on release day August 29, 2012!"

That's an exageration of course, but I hate the way they start the hype machine sometimes more than a year in advance. WOTC developers are typically far more free with new info. They hype too of course, but they don't come across as elitist members of a secret society the way WW guys do.

Have you looked at the revised system? I really think they cleaned up the dice pool problems. The only complaint I have now is the fact that you actually have to roll multiple dice and count the successes. I like d20's one roll much better.

Still, the new Storyteller mechanics are much....tighter....than the old.

Ah, but the new dice they're producing make that MUCH easier. The numbers 8-10 (success!) are done in white, while the numbers 1-7 (failure) are done in black. Thus it is easy to count successes at a glance.

But they are ugly... :\
A good idea though. I think I'll paint my old vampire dice. :)
