Vampires and dismemberment (discussion)

I've had someone tell me that the vampires arm would mist and return to the coffin. I disagreed because that should only happen when the vampire is reduced to 0 hit points.

A 3.x vampire can turn to gaseous form as a standard action.

Allow the gas of the limb to rejoin the rest of the body, and reform as solid. Poof, one restored limb. He doesn't get any hit points back in this process, mind you, but he doesn't have to hop around like a ninny on one leg either.

I wouldn't call a sundered limb necessarily cut off, by the way. It would be damaged beyond use (say, all the bones shattered so well it just flops there, or muscles or ligaments severed), but that's different from outright dismemberment.

Either position (regrow, not regrow) is perfectly reasonable. I think I would say the limb regrows unless the weapon or power used to sever had an energy source antithetical to vampires such as holy, radiant or solar.

The killer argument is, ofc, "Have you ever seen a one-legged vampire?"

I think this falls into the fluff category, my opinion is do what is best for the story. I'm pretty simple like that. 1 armed vampires sound kidna lame to me, so I'd probably just say it grows back if the vampire gets a chance to rest up between a fight. Unless of course the PCs went out of their way, did something special like chop his arm off using some holy weapon made for the purpose or some-such. If they did that and were trying to maim BBEG who happened to be a vampire in my campaign that would be good story stuff and I'd certainly keep it.
