Vampires and werewolves!

So does anyone know anything about it, other than the fact that it's vampires and lycanthropes duking it out? I don't know jack squat about it, but it looks interesting, so I'm curious to know more.

As for Kate Beckinsale, while she's incredibly gorgeous, I STILL have a bad taste in my mouth after having watched "Pearl Harbor" (Something which repeated viewings of "Tora! Tora! Tora" haven't cured me of). So just her being in it won't, by itself, be much of a draw.

I think it looks pretty cool, although, I have to tell you, Kate Beckinsale will not be my primary reason to see it ;)
Yeah, you would have a thing with Felicity's boyfriend-turned-wolfman, Scott Speedman. ;)

However, a part of me (that has nothing to do with the experience of going to see this movie), feels bad for White Wolf. Movies that are either inspired by or accidently coincidentally like their rpg world give no credit to White Wolf itself. I doubt we'll see a blurb in the credit sequence that says something like, "based on the setting created by White Wolf".
AFAIC, ideas cannot be legally copyrighted. So while White Wolf may be (and I say that loosely) responsible for the idea of "vampire vs. werewolf" brought forth through their RPGs, I doubt they can claim they own and control the idea when being used by someone else.

However, if the movie Underworld uses elements lifted straight from their copyrighted works or any trademarks they legitimately owned, THEN they can claim infringement and unauthorized use.

AFAIC, the Underworld film production have as much right to use the concept and make it their own just as White Wolf uses the concept of vampire from Bram Stoker.

Not exactly a concept unique to White Wolf. I once saw an episode of The Real Ghostbusters in which vampires and werewolves were enemies. So in that regard, The Real Ghostbusters got there first. Then again, so did Leif Erickson, but we don't celebrate Leif Erickson Day, now do we? :p

Should we celebrate Leif Erickson as a holiday? If it means one less work day in a year then yeah.

Anyhoo, just do not expect the movie to give props to White Wolf, but do expect the company to take this as an opportunity to ride on the movie's coattail and promote their wares. After all, they gotta make money ... to feed their children with blood.

Yes, yes....I know. My point isn't about who has legal rights or any of that. I'm just saying that one of the things I like to do is tell my friends about other authors that may have also done that formula of ideas before as well. While I like to see certain properties give a 'nod' to their predecessors, I know it won't happen and they really owe nothing to those said predecessors. However, it just would be nice is all.

If the creators of "Underworld" make no acknowledgements to any previous writers who have created modern world settings that have both vampires and werewolves in it......then I'm not going to fault them or think any less of them. Remember I original said , "However, a part of me (that has nothing to do with the experience of going to see this movie), feels bad for White Wolf. "

I never said that "Underworld" owed them anything.

I also state again, my other goal when bringing up WW is not to credit them as THE originators of this setting style.....but to show my friends that rpgs aren't all dragons and dungeons. There are other cool settings/worlds going on. Yeah, I'm basically constantly advertising rpgs to my non-gamer friends when I see a good chance to do so. I saw a good chance recently when they all saw the trailer to "Underworld". They all expressed how cool they thought it looked. I saw an opening....I brought up White Wolf. They thought that sounded cool. Who knows, before they may have never given rpgs a try because they only were offered D&D as their first game. But now....they may be willing to take the plunge/sample if their first game is set in the White Wolf (vampire, werewolf, mage, wraith, fairy) world.

Maybe you feel bad for White Wolf when Kindred: The Embraced didn't last long on the FOX network, among other genre series (e.g., Celtic-based fantasy ROAR).

Speaking of which, I have been desperately looking for the DVD collection of that V:TM based series, or what's left of it.

Anyhoo, almost every genre TV shows and films inspired game designers to make RPG clones of them. Of course, some of the richer publishers are willing to go out and pitch the IP owners for a license to make officially licensed games.
