Variant Campaign Rules: Contacts, Honor, and Reputation

Has anyone used the following variant rules in a campaign they have run/played in? I am contemplating the use of these variants for my next campaign and was curious as to what people thought of them.

Honor
Reputation

I've only done contacts, and they can be only gained through quests or roleplaying in my campaigns. That is, the player has to befriend the NPC instead of just assuming he meets a person every few levels based on his class(as unusual as it is, a Wizard or Barbarian can happen to be sociable). Other than that, they are about the same. It's a fairly good rule, in my opinion.
