Close. Vecna as pronounced "vek-na" means loaf. As in, a loaf of bread. :D

Now, večna (vetchna for those without Unicode support) is the female form of the adjective "večan" which means eternal.

Vetchna is eternal in Russian as well.

Just a thought, perhaps the name is somehow connected to Koschei the Undying from Russian folklore?

So, is Vecna only canonical to Greyhawk, or does he at all extant in Faerun?

Playing by the 2e rules where all of the different settings are part of the same multiverse, yes. Vecna could influence Faerun, but not easily, since he's unknown there. In 3e, Greyhawk and Faerun use different cosmologies, so they're not compatible.

Demiurge out.

P.P.S. I always thought the Vecna name was one of those anagrams that Gygax and crew always put in the game (Xagyg, etc.). Vecna -- Vance -- author Jack Vance, who was cited by Gygax as a great influence in the game design? Maybe? Maybe not? Anyone know? Thanks

Yep. Brian Blume created Vecna, and the name is definitely an anagram for Vance. For similar anagrams from Greyhawk and OD&D, see my site at http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_anagrams.html
