Vegetarians and the Single Man

So I have recently fallen under the sway of one of the fairer of the fairer sex, and come to discover that she has just decided to become a vegetarian. This causes a problem in that one of my most woo worthy skills is my cooking. Unfortunatly, I know almost nothing about cooking for a vegetarian. I was hoping there might be a few of you out there that can either tell me of some recipies, or even suggest a cookbook on the subject that you find particularly good. I need all the help I can get.

Peanut butter and jelly
Pasta with meatless sauce
Grilled Cheese
Cheese or vegetable Pizza
Cereal
French Toast
Pancakes
Waffles
Soups

Or is she no eggs as well as an ingerdient? (that throws out most bread)

Good luck

first things first, what is her definition of 'Vegetarian"?

I know people who cover the full range, from 'vegetarians' who basically stay away from red meat and pork, to full fledged versians (also known as vegans). Heck I've known a fruitarian or two as well.

If your lucky she well still eat animal byproducts, and if your really lucky she will still eat fish. But if she goes full vegan, you must pick up a book on proper dietary planning for 'vegans'. Also, removal of refined products like white flour and pure sugar will usually be next for a full vegan, oh, and consider some 'beano' or other digestive aid. you might want to slip it into her meal. ;)

While I cannot imagine the horror of a relationship with someone who refused to eat meat :D, I think that if I was going to cook a lot of vegetarian meals, I would go the chinese stir fry route. The addition of peanuts or tofu to most stir fry recipes adds a bit of protein and the art of stir-frying is fairly easy to pick up. Any number of chinese cook-books can provide a starting point for how to make various dishes, but the real fun to me is working out ways to mix and match the ingredients for variations on the theme.

same situation happened to me some years back. So i learned quite a bit about variety of food preparations.

The best cookbook and worth the investment are the Mossewood cookbooks. even for nonvegs (gave it up, funny how those things happen) it is some good cooking.

the best actually, check them out.

Don't be afraid of vegetarian dishes! They can be just as good as meatie dishes. Stores such as Wild Oats and Whole Foods sell vegitarian mixes equivelent to Sloppy Joes, Taco Meat, Chili, and numerous others. These taste remarably good - to the point where my wife and I prefer them over the hamburger-beef alternatives - and we're not even vegetarian! Good luck with your femme!

I'm not vegetarian, nor a cook so I can't help you. But I had to jump in here to give props to my wife who is vegetarian, but also loves to cook, and has no problem cooking me delicous meals that include meat all the time, even though she can not eat them herself. I'm a lucky man. :D

I am so glad my gf is not vegetarian. I don't think I'd be able to cope without meat.

I love fruit and veg too, but I couldn't do without beef or especially chicken. And fish. And eggs. And dairy products in general!

Two words: Moosewood Restaurant. It's a vegetarian restaurant that produces excellent vegetarian cookbooks. They have recipes online here:

I can personally vouch that the recipes are quite good. Enjoy!
