Sword of Spirit
Legend
I'm planning to have an NPC start out a conversation with the party by suggesting that they all cast away their weapons and ally with her so that they can accomplish more, etc. She will cast the suggestion spell on whichever party member she thinks it would be most effective to target.
The spell has a verbal component. That seems like it would be a dead giveaway to the casters in the party that a spell was being cast (and I'd then allow an Intelligence (Arcana) check to identify which spell). That makes this sort of thing essentially useless in this sort of situation.
So how do you guys handle these sorts of things? How do you interpret verbal components in general? I tend to assume the words are not a normal language, but are, for lack of a better way of explaining it, basically words in a magical language. So they will sound like gibberish to non-spellcasters, and be familiar to spellcasters.
But maybe I'm just going about it wrong. Perhaps I should just say that verbal components are normal words in whatever language you want to speak. But that way it seems to make it too easy to disguise any sort of spellcasting you may want to do. It also seems to detract from the feel of D&D spellcasting a bit.
