cool, i'll try to remember to keep that in mind. :) if no one has any other ideas on "themes", i'll poll-up what we've got, and go with that.

OK, since i'm not entirely sure where i want to go with all of this at the moment, i think we should break it up into themes. we can even do a poll on which ones would work the best. i think we could break it up by types (beetles, worms, spiders - could easily be more than one query at that); terrain (underground, extraplanar, aquatic, desert, forest, marsh), or other themes like gigantic bugs (Gargantuan and up), parasites, intelligent vermin, and swarms of vermin.

any other ideas on themes? just flip through what we have to work with, on these incredibly long posts:

I'm cool with pitching different themes on the truly unique vermin, but I still feel we should lump all the slightly-variant spiders, scorpions, worms, etc. into a single article using a table or something to indicate how they differ from the MM versions. Something along the lines of what Scott did in the ToH with the variant snakes. I think that would have a good shot at acceptance.

We definitely need a poll. The list of beetles and spiders are definitely long enough that they could be their own thematic query.

However, I think that picking a number of fairly unique selections for a single query is a excellent idea. Here are my 10 suggestions, all based on the listed choices that should be "vermin", IMO, and not something else...

Bee, Pulp
Beetle, Giant Oil
Dragonfly, Giant
Goldbug
Hallucigenia (all)
Insect Swarm, Velvet Ants
Opilionid
Slug, Giant
Spider, Crab
Wall-Walker

And here's my votes for 10 honorable mentions that are a little more out there...

Beetle, Agony
Fly, Fireball
Gloomwing
Horax
Jishin Mushi (Earthquake Beetle)
Lock Lurker
Mason Wasp, Giant
Snail, Flail
Spider, Crystal
Whiz-Bang Beetles (Swarm)

i might just do a "general vermin theme" with my favorites on it. ;) anyway, the poll is up, go tell me what you think. :)

started here, will continue on as time allows...

“Meet the Beetles”

The 3.5 Monster Manual presents us with 3 varieties of giant beetle; the bombardier, fire, and stag beetles. However, more than a few types of oversized beetle exist, and this article would present some of the best from D&D’s past:

Giant Boring Beetle
Large Vermin, CR 3
These beetles bore into rotting wood and other organic material, and are usually found inside huge trees. Their oversized mandibles give them a powerful bite. A nest of boring beetles forms a hive mind, and when enough of them get together than can even gain enough collective intelligence to be as smart as a human.

Giant Rhinoceros Beetle
Large Vermin, CR 5
These jungle-dwelling beetles have a pair of mandibles, as well as a tremendous horn for goring opponents. Its brightly-colored shell is valuable as a decorative piece.

Giant Water Beetle
Medium Vermin, CR 2
These freshwater beetles inhabit shallows and hunt using scent and tremorsense. A water beetle can hold its breath for extended periods of time. Water beetles cause considerable damage to shipping operations, as they attack and sink craft to get at the tasty morsels inside.

Deathwatch Beetle
Medium Vermin, CR 9
This jet-black beetle has a skull-shaped white patch on the back of its carapace. It gathers up trinkets and affixes them to its shell using a cement-like past it exudes from its mouth. This affords it a natural disguise and lure for humanoid prey. While its bite is strong, its most deadly ability is its death rattle. By rapidly clicking its carapace, it creates a sonic effect that disrupts the body functions of living creatures. Creatures must save successfully or die; those who survive suffer damage and lingering pain.

Giant Slicer Beetle
Small Vermin, CR 6
Resembling a stag beetle crossed with a six-legged centipede, this wingless dark gray beetle possesses powerful mandibles. It has augmented critical with its bite attack, which also functions as a vorpal weapon

Giant Oil Beetle
Small Vermin, CR 1
This brown beetle with a slick brown shell, releases a foul stream of hot, oily liquid that irritates the skin of any living creature it hits. Victims suffer a -2 penalty on attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks for 24 hours.

i'm not so sure that i want to go with vorpal on the slicer beetle; as it is a low-to-the-ground multi-ped, getting hits on most Med-sized creatures seems unlikely. we could possibly explore the rare vorpal weapon hit, but that won't work for every hit and it wasn't the main feature of the slicer.

i think i said it earlier where i'd like to explore ideas like augmented critical, and/or wounding to simulate the sort of damage it used to do.

what other options do we have, or should we just work with one or more of these ideas?

Personally, I'd suggest we bring back the "sharpness" approach. There are rules in the DMG for loss of various limbs, we've got the under-used regeneration spell for regrowing them, and James Jacobs seemed disappointed at the loss of this ability. We can always offer up augmented crtical and wounding as an alternate option.
