Veronica Mars

Darn you, Tivo, you cruel green-backgrounded mistress of pain!

(Missed an apparently useful-to-see Veronica Mars as a result of having UPN air a repeat and then show the new one next week in response to Presidential Debates (so Tivo went, "Oh, that one, we just saw that, so we won't tape it again"), as well as having an episode of Lost pre-empted by my local affiliate's brilliant decision to show Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune instead of, say, Lost, that week -- again, debates, I think.)

rrrrrrrrrr.

It's the dark side of Nancy Drew. Everything gets a nice weird twist to it.

The primary mystery, as John Crichton mentioned, has to do with the death of her best friend, who was her boyfriend's sister and they are the children of the richest guy in town. Naturally, her father, the sheriff, figured out that the rich guy was involved in the murder and then, instead of the case going on Veronica's father was quickly voted out of office and is now a private detective. Veronica is now on the outs with all her old, well-to-do friends at school and hanging out with a black guy that is not a sterotype, unless it is nerdy-cool sidekick.

Shortly thereafter, Veronica's mother walked out on them. there is something odd about that also, but we haven't gotten as many clues about it as about the death of her friend.

There is a guy who is a friend of the ex-boyfriend and staying in town; he is a love interest for Veronica and the guy is one who has no problems bucking the social stigma of being seen with her.

I think all the kids they give some personality to will have a bit of a story behind them. Even in sunny California things don't always go well for anyone.

Oh, the father's former deputy is now the sheriff and seems a right prat. Some folks in the sheriff's dept still like Veronica and her father but usually keep that low-key. [edit- The mother of the dead girl and ex-boyfriend is flat out Eeeevil! :) ]

I think it is a cool show, I'm hoping it survives also.

Ok, watched tonight's episode. While the Veronica actress looks like one of my friends and is quite fetching with the black hair and schoolgirl skirt, that isn't enough to keep me watching. I do like the actor who plays her father but the rest are blah.
It's funny that you mention that. I just hired a girl who has the same first name and looks oddly familiar to Kristen Bell, just with freckles. She's probably about 5 years younger as Bell is 24 (playing a 16 year old).

Not just the richest guy in town, but the guy who most of the other rich people owe their riches to - he owns a dotcom that apparently invented streaming video, lots of people worked for him and had options, and when the company went public the stock value soared.
