Versatile Spellcaster feat from Races of the Dragon

No. And I have said as much earlier in this thread. I do, however, think that it supports my point.

I really have some trouble to see how that might support your point. :D

Let me restate what I said somewhere above. I really think, that the rules are written with single class characters in mind; in that way 'you' refers both to the character and the class in most occasions, it's a wash.

Once you enter multiclass combinations or even weirder mechanical constructs, things start to break down really fast (as seen above) and you have to look at how something works for single classed characters before applying it to other characters.

I very much don't think that they would let classes mix and match their spell slots without specifically pointing it out in some way.

I still firmly believe there is no issue of balance here.

That's something I won't say anything against ;), even though I'm not totally convinced about it's balance, but it doesn't look horridly broken to me. But balance is only a tertiary consideration when it comes to how rules work (it's more important when it comes to how rules should work).

Well I am slowly becoming convinced by the Thanee/KarinsDad crowd on this one.

I still firmly believe there is no issue of balance here. Being able to use it to help make multi-class spellcasters better is actually something the game could use, and not broken. I may in fact encourage a houserule for that reason.

FWIW I did email WotC Cust Serv this morning, no reply yet.

(I know, I know, it won't matter what they say, but I'm curious.)

So would this feat allow a 1st level Warmage to cast 2nd level spells? The warmage knows all spells of every level that they can cast, they just don't have the slots to cast them, right?

Ouch! ;)

Heh. That's covered in the Warmage spellcasting description. They only gain knowledge of all spells of a new level when they gain access to it (of course, one could argue, that this feat gives them access, but that would be a bit far-stretched).

Likewise Divine classes:
Each time such a character receives a new level of divine spells, he or she learns new spells from that level automatically.

But I can't find anything to stop this working for a wizard! If a 2nd level wizard has recorded Flaming Sphere in his spellbook, it's a spell he knows, isn't it?

To my knowledge, wizards can simply write spells of levels they cannot cast into their spellbooks, yes. This is actually quite useful for Spell Mastery.

So is there any reason a wizard (with a level of sorcerer or bard to meet the feat prerequisite) couldn't use Versatile Spellcasting to give up two of his top spell slots to cast a spell he knows (recorded in his book) a level above the top level he can cast?

Clerics don't actually know ANY spells. They have the ability to prepare and cast any spell on their spell lists, but they still don't KNOW them.

Common sense? :p
