Versus

WotC's bitch
Who else here has seen Versus?

My god, this movie redefines over-the-top. Let's see:

- Zombies
- Vampires
- Yakuzae (only one syllable away from ninjae)
- Katanae (with a chic industrial look, so as not to look anachronistic in a modern-day movie, you know)
- Guns
- Black trenchcoats
- Zombie yakuzae with guns
- Vampire yakuzae with guns and katanae
- Harley-Davidsons
- Yakuzae wearing black trenchcoats with guns and katanae, riding a Harley
- A Barrett .50 cal sniper rifle, wielded from the hip (!)

All they needed were a few pirates and dinosaurs to round it out, but not to worry, I'm sure they'll be in the sequel. Heck, from the epilogue, it's already going to feature a katana with a red dot targeting system. After that, I'll take anything.

I was watching it while eating a meatlovers pizza, and I'm thinking hang on, the stuff going into my mouth looks exactly the same as the stuff getting sprayed around on the screen. Which, combined with 5.1 surround sound, made for the perfect action movie experience, I can say.

Same director did the ninjae film Azumi. With a cute girl ninja straight outa Soul Calibur...

And Godzilla: Final Wars, which purportedly features an old-school man-in-rubber-suit Godzilla squaring off against a crappy CGI American Godzilla. And about 12 other classic kaiju monsters. And The Rock. And Henry Kissinger....

Aye! How I want to see the real Toho Godzilla stomp all up and down the rear of the crappy Matthew Broderick Godzilla. An OK movie that was, I guess, but had no right being called Godzilla.

If it was Godzilla, where was Ghidorah? Or even Megalon? ;)

Watch out with rentals of Versus. Our VHS copy is a different cut than the DVD version in our local video store -- the DVD is missing a lot of very graphic scenes, and as such, rather spectacularly distorts the story.

If you don't get to look right THROUGH a bad guy's head, you're not seeing the whole film.

But yes, Versus is hugely bad-a**. I love the way the characters all just pose every now and then, so you can admire how incredibly cool they are.

And as a guy who's spent some time learning how to fight with a Japanese sword, I have to say those swordfight sequences were HARD CORE.

Chronosome took me to see it, and now I've seen it twice in the theater. It's a great movie! Pretty much the epitome of a Feng Shui game -- that bad guys are so busy looking badass that they'd much rather do the cool thing than the smart thing.

The "joker"esque Yakuza might be my favorite bad guy, ever. :D

What what WHAT!!!! It's showing in THEATRES!!!????

Are you frickin KIDDING me?

Man, two years later and it's on movie screens? Dadgumit. I've been telling people to see this film for two years and now its showing on screens -- only NOT in Vancouver. Some days I hate the universe.

:D

Uh-oh - I just put this on the netflix queue. They've got the "Director's Cut' - is that what you have on VHS?

Don't know for sure, but yeah, probably. Remember -- through the bad guy's head is an crucial shot.

Actually, drnuncheon, could you post a comment here saying if the version you watch does in fact include a shot looking through a hole that's just punched in the head of a bad guy? Cause I'm up for buying the "Director's Cut" DVD if it's the version I have on VHS, so a little feedback there would be great. Thanks!

Those who liked Versus, keep your eyes open for Wild Zero: Rockabilly Japanese zombie transexual UFO fun! Definitely one of the craziest movies I have EVER seen.
