Very odd experience - War of the Worlds

A few weeks late, because my wife wanted to see this one with me, so we had to wait for a free evening when we could get a babysitter and all that -- we went to see War of the Worlds with some friends of ours earlier this evening.

After the movie, they expressed some disatisfaction with the movie. "It was good," they said, "but I would have liked it better if it was more like the tape."

"Huh?" I inquired. "What tape? Do you have the original book on tape?"

"No, not that."

"What, the famous radio play with Orson Welles?"

"No, not that either. Something else."

So, when we get out to our cars, they pull out this double cassette tape they have; the War of the Worlds musical.

"So let me get this straight," I say. "You're complaining that the movie wasn't enough like the musical and you think it would have been better if it was?"

"Well, yeah! It's really good!"

"Err.... no comment."

I was completely baffled by that conversation. I liked the new War of the Worlds movie quite a lot, but I can see some criticisms made towards it that I at least think are plausible. That it's too divergent from the musical though--I never expected to hear that!

The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one....

But still, THEY COME!

BOM BOM BOM doo doo doo doo doo doo...

OK I'll stop now.

Wow. That's a surprise. I totally didn't expect your message to end with the word "musical". Pretty rare when I do a double-take on a board message!

OOO LAAAAAAAAAAA!

Lashing ropes and slashing timbers
Flashing heat rays pierced the deck
Dashing hopes for our deliverance
As we watched the sinking wreck

Through the smoke of battle clearing
Though she'd bravely held the line
Slowly disappearing . . .
FAREWELL THUNDERCHILD!

Man, find yourself a copy of this. It's phenomenal and quirky. I grew up listening to this. It was done by the BBC as a radio drama. You can buy it online, I know. If nothing else, it's available on Yahoo radio.

Heh, I would have been surprised if it has been "Ice Show". But the musical is quite popular, albeit something of a cult thing.

Supposedly they are making an animated version of it. Would have been out this year, but they didn't want it to conflict with the Tom Cruise one.

There's actually a War of the Worlds musical?

Sort of. It's not a musical per se; it's more like the story told through a musical score. There was never an actual stage show.

Here's some info about it:

My dad has it on vinyl and I remember listening to it and looking through the artwork in the album jacket. It is one of the freakiest things I can remember from my childhood. The artwork is quite disturbing, as were the sound effects used for the aliens.

I actually checked it out again a few weeks after I went to see the movie. I didn't listen to it but the artwork (as cool as it is) was still fairly unsettling.
