[Very OT] Woohoo!

Doing research online, I found that my relatives in Ireland (the Lynch family) were one of the Seven Tribes of Galway! I think that means that in Celtic days, my family was nobility.

And I'm sure nobody cares but me. ;)

<-- my avatar is the Lynch coat of arms, BTW.

actually, that is a great find!, i fortunatly no my family background, and, probably because my mother is from scotland, but i am a decendent of the ancient Taylor clan from Scotland, which was septed, into the Cameron clan. and througout the tree, thier have been a few noble births.

good luck, in your findings

Is that any relation to the Galloway clan of Scotland!

Brother!

Seriously, my wife's family connects to all kinds of royalty (long lines of the kings of Sweden and Denmark, I believe) and she's also a descendent of Betsy Ross to boot. My family came to the New World in Georgia, which was a penal colony at the time. :o

Although we do think some distant ancestor of ours with an early spelling of our family name was the first sherriff of Oxford, which meant he had to be at least a minor noble. There's even some theories (probably wild, but they're fun nonetheless) that one of Charlemagne's top guys was an early form of our family name as well.

I have cherokee on my mom's side. I had a step-father whose mother traced their roots back to a fellow who was banished from Ireland for stealing the king's horses.

There is a high chance that one of my family, at the time an artillery seargent for Napoleon in Egypt, shot the noze off the sphynx. However, my great uncle is responsible for coming up with the line on the right side of the highway. And my great Grandfather was in the Civil War (we are an old family, and breed late) We have some kind of minor english nobility in there somewhere, but I can't remember.

Hehe, no. Galway is a county in Ireland (and a very marshy one, at that). Nice try, though. ;)

In Connaught, though - maybe we consorted with Queen Maeve. ;) Although for whatever reason, the Lynches (and the O'Kellys, another of the Seven Tribes) are now settled mostly in the Cork and Limerick regions.

Which of Charlemagne's guys?

The original poster said that he found this out by searching online. Is there anyway to go about doing this for someone who doesn't know much of his family history. I can trace back 5-6 generations, and I've always loved family trees and stuff, but I've never found a (relatively) easy way to go back farther.

I wasn't able to find much about my ancestors, but I did find out what my last names means (no, not gonna share my name, sorry). It turns out that my family was probably a bunch of Scots who settled in eastern Poland.

Finding that out was more looking in a Polish dictionary and a bit online though.

Well, through one family I'm related to the Danish royalty.

Through the other I'm related to Snorri Sturluson, one of the greatest and most known writer of the old Icelandic/norse sagas.

Then I'm related to Bishop Sæmunder the Wise, a big character in Icelandic fairy tales and urban myths (he existed, although I doubt the stories are true) through both families.

And I'm related to Björk.

My grandfather is all into family history and heritige so he's a fountain of knowledge about these things.

Well my name (Gable, the one in my username), which comes from the German side of my family, means "fork" (assuming it was originally Gabel). Meaning we either made and sold pitchforks, or lived at the fork in the road. ;)

Lynch/Laoghaire originally meant sailor. It's probably related to Lir, as in "Manannan Mac".
