Vest of the Displacer Beast, Amulet of the Master Spellthief

Hi!

(Zaister, please stay out of here) :D

I need help, pricing two special magic items. I trust the pros of these fine board, to estimate the right price of those two custom magic items.

I'm developing a minion of a villain that should be a wild talent according to the adventure, but I don't use psionics in my current campaign.

I'd like to give the minion a Vest of the Displacer Beast that should do the following at least once/day: Blur, Cat's Grace, and Feather Fall. The same minion, who happens to be a ranger 2/spellthief 7, will have access to an Amulet of the Master Spellthief that will be doing the following at least once/day: Probe Thoughts (6th, see Spell Compendium).

Please show me the way to pricing enlightenment.

Kind regards

Humm,
Assuming these are command-word, see http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/magicItemsCreation.html

For the first I think we are dealing with two 2nd levels and a 1st level.

Blur=2nd level*3 (caster level)*1,800=10,800. But that is for 5 times/day so 2,160
Cat's grace=2,160
feather fall assuming 1st level caster is 360.
Add that up and you have 4,680.

One can argue for uncustomary space and multiple different abilities, but I'd just stay with the price or round it up to 5,000.

The other item is 6*11*1,800/5 or 23,760. Caster level 11. Again, uncustomary space issues might enter into it.

I think there's a rule about multiple abilities costing 1.5x as much, if placed on the same item... but I don't have my books in front of me...

Hi and thank you both.

5,000 gp for the vest shoud be ok, but 23,000+ gp for the amulet is too expensive for that minion.

How may I reduce the cost or get the result (1/day probe thoughts) in another way?

Thanx for your input.

You really can't. I mean you are talking about a 6th level spell 1/day.... Options would be to use scrolls instead (lots of problems there) or to throw tons of limations on the item. Make it take 5 minutes to cast or usable only outside at night with a clear sky or something.

Of course, as the DM, you can just put it's value at whatever you want. The whole thing is just a guideline. Ifyour worry is having too much power in the PCs hands after they get it, well, I tend not to worry too much about that. If you really want to, just give the minon a mutation that lets him do that. Don't worry, be happy.

Remember, this is the cost for buying the item. The cost for crafting is half this amount (11,500 gp). It would take 11 day to craft it.

Hi!

... and thank you all for the improved input.

Even if he's a minion of a wizard (who could have taken the appropriate item creation feats), that wizard is too lazy to bother doing such stuff. On the contrary, the wizard's out to steal magic items ;).

So, the mentioned "don't-worry-be-happy-give-him-a-mutation" tip should do the trick. I'll give the minion a spell-like ability, swapping out one feat.

Thanx again, fine fellows!

Why do you need to Probe Thoughts once per day? You can do it once per week for ... what, 3,400gp or so, market value.

Hi,

... and how? ;)

Is there an obvious magic item that I did miss?

(I suppose so)...

nono, as part of the magic-item-creation rules, there is the whole "charges per day" thing. And as an addendum to that part, you can have fewer than one charge per day. There are several magic items priced this way (off the top of my head, I can't think of any, but I know I've seen them. Heck, there are items in the Sunless Citadel and Deep Horizon that have this feature).

So, if you want one charge every three days, then you divide the price by three. Ta-da!
