Vicious weapons: why melee only?

To me, it looks like mostly flavor. Physical connection between the attacker and target so that the disruptive energy can "resonate".

It could also be a balance thing, in some respects. Losing 1d6 of your own hit points is a little more significant when you're in hand-to-hand combat than it is if you're 200 feet away, tucked in a tree, with a few healing potions at hand you can drink at any point without worrying about attacks of opportunity.

Gotta agree with the flavor thing -- IMO it would be odd flavor-wise to have an arrow loosed, and then if/when it hits energy gets sucked out of you. Of course magic doesn't have to follow any rules of logic, but I'd just have a hard time with it.

The weapon I'm thinking of adding it to is a dart thruster (from Underdark). There'd be shocks of red energy running from the shooter's hand to the hilt, and following the dart in flight.

Anyone seen the picture from the steal health spell in AU/E? Kind of like that.

EDIT: I should mention that I'm the DM, looking to give this to a player, and not a player looking to bend the rules :)
