Sarkus is the sole guardian of the Dark Nexus, a key feature of Darkbridge Temple. This chamber was used to communicate and travel to the infernal planes by means of the Dark Altar, which controls the Nexus. The Nexus itself is constructed from corrupted temple menhirs originally dedicated to seven good and neutral Flan deities. These great stones are made to bleed by a great curse placed upon them, and it is this cursed Earth Blood which has sustained Sarkus these many centuries. By drinking this blood, Sarkus has bound himself to the Dark Altar, and thus has some limited control over the Nexus. By channeling negative energy through the Altar (via his Rebuke Undead power), Sarkus has learned to summon infernal aid when threatened. Each round Sarkus channels though the Altar, 1d3 Vrock demons will appear through the Nexus to attack his opponents. The summoned tanar'ri will remain in the temple for six minutes before returning to the Abyss.

Largely starved for conversation for the last two thousand years, Sarkus would much rather chat your ear off than fight, however. Mad as a hatter, and utter convinced of his towering expertise on any topic you care to mention, he will gladly lecture you to your grave. Sarkus knows much about the extensive history of the Darkbridge Temple site, and isn't shy about sharing it with a properly fawning, boot licking audience. Insolent visitors get nothing but abuse.

Sarkus is just the sort of friendly villian to tell you all his plans for your horrible demise, if you'll just ask him nicely! :D

I used both PCGen and a hand modified template (from Slayer's Guide to Undead), plus a couple of custom magic items. You're more than welcome to note any significant screw-ups - thanks!

Not bad, but how did he become the guardian of said dark nexus? You have his stats and such, but no real background. Right now he looks like little more than an obstacle for the PCs to pound and move on.

Sorry - I know there's virtually no context here. It was late and I'm short on time. Very little of the backstory is actually written up.

This is just a small part of a fairly large dungeon/site adventure. This NPC's purpose in the adventure is an information source about the dungeon backstory (with a little moral dilemma on the side), and as a combat foe in case the PC's try to destroy the Nexus (which would be a very good thing to do). This guy is pretty distainfull of the other dungeon inhabitants, and really doesn't care what the adventuring heroes do in the rest of the complex, as long as they don't mess with his power source. So if the PCs are nice to this guy, they can get alot of valuable information from him. My group has a paladin and a cleric of Heironious, so that might be a little problematical. Also, they just now turned 9th level, and he's designed to be a tough nut for them to crack, esp once he starts summoning demons. On the other hand, eliminating him allows them to puzzle out enough about the Nexus to know how to destroy it. There are several major curses and magical traps tied to this power source, and destroying it would both make the PC's job much easier and net large story EXP. Finally, he's got some kick-ass magic items, and so far the dungeon has been pretty stingy with loot (for a reason I won't get into here).

His backstory hard to explain in brief, but basically, the original guardians of the Nexus were destroyed during the apocolypse which brought down the civilization that built it. Sarkus survived this apocolypse (after a fashion) by getting into the Nexus during the ensuing confusion and drinking the Earth Blood, which is what transformed him into a ghoulish undead and allowed him to survive the downfall of Sulm. He'd hoped to be able to use the Nexus to escape the dungeon eventually, but was never able to suss out that function. In any case, he's become addicted to the Earth Blood, and cannot survive without it. He now has a symbiotic relationship with this chamber - he's pretty much stuck here.

This was my first post to this particular forum, and I wasn't sure if the emphasis here was on crunchy bits, or story. Anyway, posting this was mainly a late night whim.

Cheers!
