Visiting the UK

I'll be visiting the UK for the first time ever next week, from the 24th to the 26th for a Small Arms and Cannon Symposium (flying in the 23rd and out the 27th). I'm staying in Swindon, and giving a presentation at the Royal Military College in Shiverham.

Is there anything I should check out in the local area while I'm there? Besides being an RPG/fantasy/sci-fi buff, I'm also into military history, model airplanes, and old British roadsters.

Depending on how far you want to travel, there's the motor museum at Beaulieu, which is in the New Forest. According to the RAC website, that's 78 miles, and between 1 and 2 hours from Swindon.

They'll have a website which'll give you more detail. Oh, and if you do decide to go there, ignore how it's spelled. The name is said "Bew-Lee".

Oxford's reasonably close to Swindon, so could be worth a visit, but doesn't have much of specifically military history interest and there's surprisingly little about the motor industry as it is still a place where cars are made.

The main places for military history sites tend to be London with the Imperial War Museum, Cabinet War Rooms, Royal Airforce Museum, Tower of London, et al, Leeds with the Royal Armouries, Manchester with the northern branch of the Imperial War Museum.

Apparently Swindon has a few museums including a museum of computing.

There's the Tank Museum at Bovington which, according to the AA, is only 78.5 miles south of Swindon (2 hours 4 minutes). Gloucester (around 40 miles north of Swindon and a 45 minute drive) has a small military museum and is also home to my roleplaying club if you fancy a game on the Wednesday night (we're playing Judge Dredd and D&D3.5 that night).

Hope that helps.
